How to Repair Garage Door?

How to Repair Garage Door?

You may not realize it, but your garage door is an intricate contraption that has many interconnected parts, cable systems and springs to ensure that it works well. Therefore, if your garage door breaks or does not perform how it used to, you need know how to repair your garage door but also how to locate the problem. Typically, if your garage door fails to open easily and is faulty, then the issue comes down to the spring. A faulty garage door spring can be extremely dangerous, so you will need to know how to fix it immediately and safely.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT GARAGE DOOR SPRINGS?

The simple answer, yes. However, there are only two different types to worry about. The two different types of springs include extension springs and a torsion spring.

EXTENSION SPRINGS

The extension springs are located at the side of a garage door but above the tracks. These types of garage springs are typically found on older garage doors and have been replaced by torsion springs because extension springs are prone to breaking and flying off which can be very dangerous.

TORSION SPRINGS

Torsion springs are found on more modern garage doors and there can be one or two torsion springs depending on the model in question. These springs are usually sturdier than extension springs and are less likely to break. Torsion springs are usually given the lifespan of being able to be used between 10,000 and 30,000 times (this is dependent on the environment and how well the garage door has been kept).

Usually, both extension and torsion springs will make a large banging noise once they break. However, if you have not heard such a noise, double check the springs. If your garage door is not behaving properly, it may be because you are in need of a garage door torsion spring replacement or an extension spring replacement.

WHAT CAUSES A FAULTY GARAGE DOOR?

WEAR AND TEAR

Much like anything, your garage door can succumb to the usual wear and tear that can eventually break your garage door and snap the springs if left to build up. Make sure to check your garage door regularly to see if there are any visual signs of your garage door needing to be fixed or cleaned (there could be signs of rust building up, for example).

NOT BEING LOOKED AFTER

Your garage door needs to be looked after if you want it to last for many years to come. Neglecting your garage door and not cleaning or checking it can lead to it breaking over time and much sooner than expected. To ensure that you are elongating your garage door’s lifespan, make sure to follow proper maintenance advice so that you are caring for your garage door properly. Typical garage door maintenance tips include:

● Cleaning your garage doors regularly so that they are free from dirt
● Regularly inspecting your garage door to assess the quality of the springs
● Treating your garage door if it is made from wood
● Lubricating any moving parts so that the mechanisms move efficiently

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR GARAGE DOOR IS BROKEN

If your garage door is broken or you are unsure as to what is wrong with it, you will want to call an expert to come out and take a look. A faulty garage door can be dangerous and cause injury to a person trying to use it, so it is in your best interests to get your garage door fixed as soon as possible.

Do not neglect your garage door. If it is broken, make sure to get it fixed. If you notice that a spring is broken or that the door is not working as efficiently as before, refrain from using it until an expert has inspected the garage door.
