The garage is unheated and the door has been slow and noisy since the cold set in. Is the opener failing?
Often it is the grease rather than the motor. Old lubricant stiffens in an unheated alley garage, the opener strains against it, and the force setting trips or the door reverses partway. Cleaning and re-lubricating the rollers, hinges and spring, then resetting the force and travel limits, sorts out most of them. A stripped opener gear sounds different — the motor runs and nothing moves.
