We also look at what the failure took with it. Pulleys wear grooves and seize, the lift cable frays where it runs over them, and the S-hooks at the rear track hanger open under load. Replacing a spring and reusing a grooved pulley is a short-lived repair.
Converting to Torsion, and When It Is Worth It
Homeowners often ask about switching an old extension setup to a torsion bar. It is a genuine option and it buys better balance, quieter travel and longer service life. What it needs is headroom above the opening for the shaft and brackets, plus framing solid enough to take the centre bearing plate.
In the older detached garages around the village grid, headroom is usually the sticking point. Rafters sit low and there is no clean run for a bar. The technician measures it on site and says plainly whether it works, rather than selling the idea first and finding out after.

Those are the safety cables. They pass through the centre of each spring and anchor at both ends so a broken spring cannot fly. If you can see them, that part of the door is set up correctly.
