Extension Spring Work on Aurora's Older Doors
An extension system does its work at the sides. Two springs stretch along the horizontal tracks, each pulling through a pulley and a cable that runs down to the bottom bracket. Stretch is the whole principle, and it is also the hazard: a spring under that much tension does not simply stop working when it fails, it releases everything it was holding in one direction.

BH Garage Door services side-spring doors right across Aurora. They turn up most often on the small detached garages behind the older streets, where the original hardware is frequently still in place and has never been touched.
The Pulleys and Hooks Go Before the Spring Does
The spring gets blamed, but on these systems the small parts fail first. Sheaves wear an oval groove and start chewing through the cable. S-hooks open up under load. The pulley bracket at the rear track hanger works loose and the whole run of the spring goes off line. By the time a spring actually parts, several of those parts have been quietly failing for months.
That is why this is never just two springs. Cables, sheaves, hooks and the rear hangers are all inspected and replaced where needed, otherwise the new springs go straight back to fighting the same worn hardware that killed the last set.
Containment Cables Are Not Optional
A safety cable threads through the middle of each extension spring and anchors at both ends. If the spring breaks, that cable keeps the pieces on the wall instead of letting them travel across the garage. Doors built before this became standard practice often have none at all, and Aurora still has a great many of those doors in daily use.
Fitting them is quick and it happens on every extension-spring door we work on. If yours has bare springs with nothing running through them, that is worth dealing with whether or not anything is currently broken.
Matching the Pair, and When to Leave the System Behind
Extension springs are colour-coded to a lifting weight range, and the two on a door must match each other. Replace one and the door pulls to the strong side, rides the track unevenly and grinds out the rollers on that corner. The pair goes on together, and the door is balanced by hand at waist height before the opener is reconnected.
Some doors are better off converted to a torsion shaft above the opening, usually heavier or wider ones already working at the top of what a side-spring system can do. That needs clear headroom above the door, which many of the older garages here simply do not have, so it is a decision made at the garage rather than assumed on the phone.

Questions
Aurora questions about this job
One of my springs is visibly longer than the other. Is that a problem by itself?
Yes. A spring that has taken a permanent set has lost tension and will never match its partner again. The door lifts crooked and the corner on the weak side carries the extra load. Both get replaced as a matched pair.
Do the pulleys have to be changed every time?
Not always, but they are checked every time. A sheave with a grooved or oval race saws through a new cable quickly, so where that wear exists the pulley is replaced while the system is already apart.
My garage is detached and unheated. Does that shorten spring life?
It shortens the life of everything around the spring. Moisture sits on bare steel in an unheated building, hooks and cables corrode where they bear against the pulley, and rust in a stretched coil speeds up fatigue. Doors in unheated garages need their hardware looked at more often.
