Straightening Out an Aurora Door That Has Left Its Track

Old Framing Lets the Horizontal Run Sag
The horizontal track hangs from the ceiling on perforated angle or straps, lagged into joists or rafters. In a garage built when Aurora's older neighbourhoods went up, that lumber is dry and hard, and the lags in it have been taking a shock load every time the door reaches the top for decades. They loosen. The back end of the run drops a fraction, and now the door climbs uphill on the way in and slaps at the curve on the way out.
You can often hear it before you see it. A bang or a shudder as the door transitions from vertical to horizontal, or a rear track that visibly sways when the door reaches the end of its travel. Re-anchoring into sound framing, adding proper rear supports and re-levelling both runs so they are parallel and equally spaced from the door is the actual fix. Tightening the loose lag back into the same tired hole is not.
The Curve Is Where Doors Jump the Rail
Almost every off-track door leaves at the same place: the radius where vertical track meets horizontal. That joint takes the roller at its most awkward angle, so any misalignment there gets punished. A screw head standing proud inside the channel, a joint that has been pulled apart by a knock, grit and old leaves packed into the bend, or a bracket that has drifted are the usual culprits.
If the door has already come out, the important thing is to stop using it. Pull the manual release so nobody can run the motor, keep people and vehicles clear of the opening and leave the door where it stands. A door that has jumped one roller is normally a short repair. The same door after somebody has powered it twice more is a bent section and a torn hinge plate.
Track Is Not One Universal Part
Track comes in different gauges, different roller widths and different curve radii, and a door needs the set that suits its weight and headroom. Wide insulated doubles on the newer side of the city carry real weight per hinge and are unforgiving of anything thin or approximate. Low-headroom garages need their own radius entirely. Mixing parts because they physically bolt together is how a door ends up binding forever.
On some of the older garages we find the vertical track fastened straight into the jamb rather than bolted to adjustable angle. It holds until the wood gives up, then nothing stays in alignment no matter how often it is adjusted. Re-mounting to proper brackets so the track can be set true and stay there is the repair that finally ends the recurring call.

There are shiny scrape marks along the inside of the track. What do they mean?
That the rollers are riding hard against one flange instead of running centred in the channel. It points to a track that is out of alignment, a door that is out of square, or worn roller stems with play in them. It is worth acting on, because that rubbing is what eventually bends the rail.
Does track work mean new rollers as well?
Frequently, yes. A worn roller widens the channel and a damaged channel destroys rollers, so the two travel together. Replacing one and leaving the other is how the same fault returns within a season. Nylon rollers on a door that came with plain steel ones are also a large improvement in noise.
Should I grease the track to stop the door sticking?
No. Grease in the channel collects grit and turns into a paste that makes the binding worse. The track wants cleaning, not lubricating. The rollers, hinges, bearings and the spring itself are the parts that take lubricant.
The garage is tight and the door keeps getting knocked. How do I stop the repeat?
A floor-mounted wheel stop set at the right distance keeps bumpers off the door and the bottom section. Beyond that, keep bikes, ladders and bins away from the vertical rails, since leaning gear against the track is a common cause of the misalignment we come out to fix.
