Quieting Down a Noisy Garage Door in Aurora
Rollers are minor parts by any measure and they decide almost everything about how a door sounds. Ten small wheels carry the whole door through the curve of the track, and once their bearings dry out or their tyres flatten, every one of them starts announcing itself through the ceiling.

That matters more in some Aurora houses than others. The east-side subdivisions built through the 1990s and 2000s put bedrooms and family rooms directly above an attached garage, so a worn set of rollers is heard by the whole house at six in the morning. BH Garage Door replaces rollers across the city.
Steel, Nylon and What Is Actually in Your Track
Builders fit plain steel rollers with exposed ball races because they are cheap and they last long enough to clear the warranty. The races collect grit, the balls lose their grease, and the wheel starts skidding along the rail instead of rolling down it. Sealed nylon rollers run on a closed bearing, will not rust and are noticeably quieter on the same door.
Stem length and diameter have to match the hinges already on the door. The bottom rollers sit in the bottom brackets, which is the one place on a door a homeowner should never be undoing bolts, because those brackets are anchored under full cable tension.
Flat Spots, Cracked Tyres and Doors That Jump
A roller that has seized stops turning and drags. Drag wears a flat on one side of the wheel, and once there is a flat the door thumps at the same point in its travel every single time. On the curved section of track that thump is enough to lift a roller clear of the rail, which is how a fair number of off-track calls actually begin.
Nylon tyres crack and shed with age too, especially in unheated detached garages that swing from freezing to hot across the year. A roller with half a tyre left will keep rolling, badly, right up until the day it does not.
The Parts Either Side of the Roller
A roller is only as good as the hinge holding it and the rail guiding it. Hinges elongate at the stem hole, which lets the roller wander and cocks it in the track. Track itself picks up dents from bikes, ladders and car doors in the narrow garages behind the older streets, and no new roller runs smoothly through a dented rail.
So every roller job takes in the hinges, the track joints and the lag bolts holding the vertical rails to the jamb, plus a wipe-down of the rail. Track gets cleaned, never greased. Grease in a rail collects the grit that destroys the next set of rollers.

Questions
Aurora questions about this job
How many rollers does a normal door have?
Two per section on most residential doors, so eight on a four-section door and ten on a five-section. They wear as a set and get replaced as a set. Mixing fresh rollers with worn ones just puts the door back to running unevenly.
Will nylon rollers fix the noise on their own?
Usually most of it. What they will not fix is a failed bearing on the spring shaft, a loose opener bracket or a rattling top section. Those are separate noises with separate causes, and the technician will tell you which one you have before selling you rollers.
A roller popped out of the track. Can I put it back myself?
It is not worth it. The door has to be secured before anything is re-seated, and whatever caused it — a flat roller, a bent rail, a loose hinge — will still be there afterwards. Leave the opener disconnected and the door where it is.
