Drums and Pulleys Fail for Different Reasons
On a torsion door the cables wind onto grooved drums at each end of the shaft above the opening. They stay in their grooves only while there is tension on them, so anything that creates slack, a door landing on a bin or a bumper, a spring letting go, a set screw slipping on the shaft, gives the drum a chance to unwind cable and lose the wrap.
The older extension-spring doors in the city work differently. Their cables run over pulleys at the back of the horizontal track and down to the spring. Those pulleys are the weak point. The sheave seizes in its bearing, the cable stops rolling and starts sawing across a stationary wheel, and the strands wear through in one spot. Replacing the cable without replacing a seized pulley just books the next visit.

Getting the Tension Even Again
New cables go on as a pair. Both sides have taken the same years of load, flexing and damp, so pairing a new cable with a survivor is a false economy. The technician checks the drums for grooving and the set screws for slip, looks over the bottom brackets, and inspects the springs, since a cable failure very often follows a spring that was already finished.
Then both drums are set to an identical position and the cables tensioned to match. Even a small difference shows up as a door that lifts with one corner leading and lands with a wedge of daylight along the floor. Once it is right, the door gets cycled and balanced by hand before the opener goes back on and the travel limits are reset.
