Slack Builds on the Way Down, Not on the Way Up

People assume a cable gives out under load. Usually the opposite is true. The door meets something on the way down, a bin lid, a bag of ice melt, a bike wheel, a ridge of frozen slush along the bottom seal, and stops. The opener does not stop with it. The drums keep unwinding for another moment, and the cable comes out of its groove, loops back over itself, or drops off the drum entirely.

A Wide Double Has No Tolerance for Uneven Drums

The two drums sit on one shaft and have to wind at exactly the same rate. A drum that has crept sideways, a set screw backed off, or a cable seated one groove out will lift one side fractionally faster than the other. On a narrow single door that shows up as a slight lean you might live with for months. On a wide double it takes the whole assembly out of square, bends track, and eventually pulls the second cable off as well.

So the drums are set true on the shaft and both sides are tensioned together rather than one after the other, before the door is trusted to run under power again.

Both cables get changed even when only one has failed. They went on the same day, made the same number of trips and stood through the same winters, so the survivor is a short way behind. Cable is a wear item, and a second visit for the other side helps nobody.

The visit covers the whole counterbalance rather than the broken piece on its own: spring condition and tension, drums, bearings, the bottom brackets the cable loops through, and any track it has been dragging against. Then the door is balanced by hand, the opener reconnected and its travel and force limits reset. The bottom brackets in particular stay a technician's job. The door is crooked but it still moves. Can I run it once more to get the car out?

Please do not. With one cable gone the whole load is on the other side and the door is no longer square in its opening. One more cycle can bend the track, pull the good cable off its drum and leave the door sitting above whatever is parked underneath. Ring and say the car is inside.

Can a cable that has come off the drum simply be wound back on?

Occasionally it is physically possible, but it is not a homeowner job and it usually is not the right repair. Slack cable means the spring above is still holding its energy, and the drum is exactly what that energy winds onto. A cable that has jumped has normally been crushed or kinked in the groove, and it gets inspected on that basis.

One cable is fraying at the bottom but nothing has snapped yet. How urgent is that?

Fraying is the warning shot, and it is the right moment to book. Those strands part a few at a time and the ones left take a larger share of the load with each one that goes, which is why the last stretch fails all at once. Booked now it is a routine appointment.
