The Two Systems That Stop a Door Closing on Something
Two independent systems are meant to stop a garage door closing on a child, a pet or a bumper. The photo eyes across the opening break a beam and send the door back up. The opener's own force sensing feels resistance and reverses. Federal rules have required both on residential openers since 1993, and both need testing to know they still do what they claim.

Testing It, Not Just Looking at It
Force reversal is tested against an obstruction, normally a length of timber laid flat on the floor in the path of the door. The door should touch it and go straight back up. A door that presses on and crushes it has its force set too high, and almost always because somebody wound it up to make an unbalanced door close.
Photo eyes get checked for height, alignment and wiring. Mounted above knee level they miss the thing they exist to catch. Aimed loosely they trigger at random, which is how a frustrated owner ends up bypassing them. Both faults are common and both are quick to put right.

How do I test the auto-reverse myself?
Lay a solid piece of timber flat on the floor under the door and close it with the opener. The door should contact the wood and reverse immediately. If it does not, stop using the opener until someone has looked at it.
