Builder Track Was Sized for the Door It Came With
Track comes in different gauges and volume builders fit the lightest one that will do the job on the day. That is perfectly fine for the thin uninsulated door originally hung on it. It is less fine two decades later when a heavier insulated door has gone up on the same rails, or when the hardware has been through a couple of owners and somebody's handyman. Light-gauge steel flexes, the flexing works the fixings loose, and loose fixings let the whole run drift out of line.
Where that is the story, replacing the affected lengths in a heavier gauge beats persuading the old ones back into shape. Steel that has been folded once folds again in the same place, and a roller has to travel through that spot under load thousands more times.
The Horizontal Run and What Hangs Off the Ceiling
Horizontal track is held up off the joists by hanger straps, and in a garage that also carries overhead storage racks, a bike hoist or a ceiling that was drywalled in later, those straps are seldom the only thing up there. They get shortened, moved, or fixed into whatever happened to be closest at the time. The result is a horizontal run sitting at the wrong pitch, so the door climbs or drops through the curve and the rollers bind exactly where the two sections meet.
Pitch and support get measured on a track call rather than eyeballed. The verticals are checked plumb and parallel across the full width of the opening, the radius gets the closest look because that is where most binding lives, and the horizontal run is re-hung into solid framing wherever it needs to be.
Reseating a Roller Is Not the Repair
When a door comes off, the rollers are the visible symptom. Popping them back in and walking away leaves whatever pushed them out still sitting there, and that is usually a bent length of track, a worn roller stem, a lag bolt that has backed itself out of a timber jamb over years of vibration, or a cable that jumped first and dragged the door out of square as a consequence.
So the door gets supported, the tension dealt with where it needs to be, the rollers fed back into the rail in order, and then the cause is found and put right. Worn rollers are assessed at the same time, because one with a flat-spotted bearing will walk perfectly good track back out of line inside a season. If your door has already left the rail, resist the urge to run the motor and force it back. Take the opener out of the loop at the release cord if you can reach it safely, then leave everything where it stands.

There is a bang as the door goes round the curve at the top. What causes that?
Three usual suspects, all at that same point. A roller with a worn bearing skipping through the radius, a hinge plate loose enough to let one section knock against the next, or a flare where the vertical track meets the horizontal. It is worth booking before it becomes a jam, because the curve is where a door leaves the rail.
The roller on one side does not sit as tight in the channel as the other. Is that a fault?
A small, even gap is normal and intended, because the roller is not meant to be gripped by the channel. What is not normal is a gap that opens and closes as the door travels, or one side plainly wider than the other along the whole run. That means the track is out of line, the door is out of square, or a stem is worn.
My overhead storage rack is bolted up right beside the track. Is that a problem?
Only if it loads the same joists the hanger straps rely on, sits where the door needs to travel, or has had a strap moved to make room for it. Clearance and the fixings both get checked, and where the track has been compromised to fit something else in, it gets re-hung properly.
How long does a track repair usually take?
Most are a single visit. Track sections, rollers, brackets and fixings are stock items on the trucks, so a bent vertical or an off-track door is normally diagnosed and put right in one appointment. A full set of verticals and horizontals on a wide door is a bigger day, and you will know which of the two you have before anything is unbolted.
