Why a Crown Point Door Leaves Its Track, and What Fixes It

Newer garages fail differently. Track brackets are lagged into the jamb and hung from the joists, and those fixings work loose over a few thousand cycles until there is enough movement for a roller to skip. Long horizontal runs over a wide double sag between hangers where the spacing was generous at install.

Then there is contact. A wide door and a car reversing out is a common pairing, and the damage often lands on the track rather than the panel, leaving a flattened section the rollers have to fight past on every trip. Residential-gauge track dents easily and does not come back straight under a hammer, whatever the internet suggests. The affected length gets replaced.

A door that has come off has its weight supported and the spring tension dealt with before anything is moved, because a part-derailed door with live springs above it is not stable. Then the rollers come out, the track is checked for straightness along its length, fixings are re-set into sound material, and the vertical sections are set plumb and parallel to each other rather than to the wall.

Rollers get judged as part of the same job. Worn stems and flat spots on old steel wheels are often the reason the door jumped in the first place. Nylon replacements run considerably quieter, which is noticeable in a detached garage with bare walls and nothing to absorb the sound.
