A light tap on the bottom panel is enough to push the vertical track out of plumb, and after that the bottom roller rides the edge of the channel instead of sitting inside it.
Caught early, that is a straighten and a realignment. Left through a season, the roller wears a flat, the lip of the track splays open, and the door eventually jumps out under load.
Old Framing Does Not Stay Still
Track is only ever as straight as the thing it is bolted to. In garages built decades ago the jambs move with the seasons, lag screws back out of softened timber, and the horizontal hangers work loose at the rafter. The result is a door that runs sweetly one season and binds the next, with nothing obviously broken anywhere on it.
So part of any track visit is going back over every fixing: jamb brackets, hanger straps, the header bracket, the roller stems and the hinges between panels. Tightening loose hardware and re-plumbing the verticals puts more doors right than most people expect.
Straightening a Track, and Knowing When Not To
A gentle bow in a vertical section can be dressed back to shape and will hold. A kink, a crushed run or a track split at a seam should be replaced. Steel that has been bent back never quite keeps the original profile, and the roller finds that weak point again within a few months.
If a door has come out of its track rather than merely running rough, we treat the cause as unfinished business until we find it. A snapped cable, a collapsed roller, a loose bracket or a badly unbalanced door will all throw a door out of the channel, and lifting it back in without sorting the reason is a repeat visit waiting to happen.

Please do not. An off-track door is held up by whatever cable and roller are still engaged, and leaning on it can bring the whole thing down. Leave it, keep people and cars out from underneath, and call.

Both are worth checking. A noise that repeats at one point usually means a dent or a joint in the track, or a roller with a flat spot that only touches once per revolution. The technician runs the door slowly by hand to find it.
Should I be greasing the tracks?
No, and this is the one people get wrong most often. Grease inside the channel collects grit and makes the running worse. Wipe the channel clean and dry, then lubricate the rollers, hinges, bearings and springs instead.
A car hit the door. Is the damage just the track?
Not usually. An impact hard enough to move the track normally leaves a bent bottom bracket, a dented panel or a bowed bottom rail as well. We assess the whole bottom section, because a panel that has lost its rigidity keeps pulling the door back out of line.
