What Gets Lubricated, and What Must Not
Hinge pivots, roller bearings, the torsion spring coils, the end bearings and the center bearing plate, the shaft the cable drums ride on, the opener's chain or screw rail, and the lock bar if the door still has one. A white lithium grease or a purpose-made garage door lubricant clings and stays put through a temperature swing. A thin penetrating oil runs straight off and then collects dust.
The track gets nothing. That surprises people, but rollers are meant to roll along a track, not slide down it. Grease in the track becomes a black paste of dirt and rubber that makes the rollers skid, and skidding is what puts flat spots on a nylon tire.
Belt-drive openers get nothing on the belt either. Chain drives take a light coat on the chain. Screw drives need the specific grease made for that rail, and the wrong product on a screw drive does real damage.
Why an Unheated Garage Is Worse in January

The door comes off the opener and gets lifted by hand to check balance, the photo eyes and auto-reverse get tested, and the travel limits and force settings go back to where they belong rather than where they have drifted to. A quiet door that is out of balance is still a door with a problem.

How often should the door be lubricated?
