Can a torsion spring be re-wound instead of replaced?
A broken one cannot. The steel has fractured and there is nothing left to wind. A spring that is still intact but tired can be given extra turns, and the door will feel right again for a while. That is borrowed time. It lost torque because the steel has taken a permanent set over tens of thousands of cycles, and adding tension to worn steel does not undo that. We will do it as a stopgap if you need the door working today, and we will tell you plainly that it is one.
Does a broken torsion spring damage anything else?
It can, which is why running the opener afterwards is a bad idea. When a spring lets go the door drops onto whatever is still holding it. That can pull a cable off its drum, bend the top section around the opener arm, or strip the drive gear as the motor tries to lift a door that is suddenly several times heavier than it was built to move.
