Reading the Old Spring Before Ordering the New One

A torsion spring is defined by four numbers: wire diameter, inside diameter of the coil, overall length, and which direction it is wound. Get any of them wrong and the door is either too heavy to lift by hand or light enough to drift up on its own. Neither is safe, and both eat hardware.

Those numbers get measured at the house rather than assumed from the door size. Doors fitted through the eighties and nineties around here have often been re-sprung once already by whoever was available at the time, so what is on the shaft is not always what the manufacturer specified. Measuring is the only honest way to know.

Standard Cycle, or Paying Once for High Cycle

Springs are sold by cycle rating, and a standard one is rated around ten thousand open-and-close trips. High-cycle versions use thicker wire on a longer coil to reach two or three times that, and they cost more at the outset.

The question worth asking is how the garage actually gets used. Where the garage door is the household's front door — two cars in and out, plus bikes, bins and the dog — ten thousand cycles arrives sooner than the arithmetic suggests. On the three-car garages out toward the newer west side, one bay usually runs constantly while the others barely move, which is why one door outlives its neighbour by years.

Turns, Bars and the Balance Check

A spring is wound to a specific number of quarter turns for the height and weight of the door. Winding bars go into the cone, the set screws bite the shaft, and tension is built in stages. Improvising that with a screwdriver is how people end up in an emergency room.

The job is not finished when the spring is on. The trolley gets disconnected and the door is lifted by hand to about waist height. Wound correctly it stays exactly where it is left. Creeping upward means too much turn, sinking means too little, and it gets adjusted until it holds still.

The door lifts a few inches and stops. Spring or opener?

Almost always the spring. The opener has enough pull to start a door moving but not to carry it, so it lifts the section nearest the floor, hits the real weight and gives up. Pull the release cord and try lifting by hand. If it feels like lifting a fridge, the spring is gone.

Cycles, not calendar years. A household that uses the garage as its main entrance can spend a spring's entire rated life in four or five years, while a house that mostly parks on the drive takes fifteen. Cold snaps and a door that is out of balance both shorten it further.
