Replacing One Section Instead of the Whole Door
Which section took the damage decides most of what happens next. A dent across the middle of a door is cosmetic. A crushed bottom section is structural, because that is where the lift cables anchor and where the door meets the floor.

The other half of the answer is whether the section still exists. Doors fitted around here through the eighties and nineties came from manufacturers that have since changed hands, discontinued lines or altered the stamped pattern. Sometimes a matching section is one phone call. Sometimes it is not available at all.
Bottom and Top Sections Are Carrying Loads
The bottom section holds the bottom brackets, the cable ends and the floor seal, and it takes the entire weight of the door when it is shut. Bend it and the door stops sealing along the concrete, the cables pull at an angle and the rollers start to bind in the track.
The top section carries the opener arm bracket and, on most doors, the top roller carriers that hold the door square in the opening. Damage there shows as a gap along the header when the door closes. Middle sections are the forgiving ones — unsightly, but rarely urgent.
Matching a Door That Is Twenty Years Old
Four things have to line up: the embossment pattern, the section height, the steel gauge and the end-stile hardware. Section height is the one that catches people out. Older doors were commonly built in twenty-one-inch sections, newer ones in twenty-four, and the two cannot be mixed on one door.
All of that gets recorded at the estimate visit, along with anything stamped on the inside face or the end stile. If the line is still in production a matching section is ordered. If it has been discontinued you hear that on the day rather than after three weeks of waiting.
The New Section Will Not Match the Colour
This is worth saying before you decide anything. A factory-fresh white section sitting next to twenty years of Illinois sun reads noticeably brighter, and almond and sandtone doors shift further than white does. From the pavement it usually settles into the rest of the door within a season or two. From two feet away on the day of the fit, it is visible.
Where the garage door dominates the front of the house and the neighbours all face the road the same way, that matters more than it would elsewhere. It is a fair reason to price the section repair and a full replacement side by side and choose with both in front of you.

Stop using it until it has been looked at, particularly if the impact was low down. A deformed bottom section pulls the cables out of line, and running the door that way can unseat a cable from its groove or leave the whole door sitting crooked in the opening. Lift it by hand if you need the car out.
Can more than one section be replaced?
Yes, and it is common after an impact that folded two sections together. There comes a point where the sections, labour and the hardware that gets replaced along with them approach the cost of a new door, and at that point you get told so plainly rather than sold the repair.
What makes a panel crack when nothing has hit it?
Fatigue and corrosion. Steel cracks around hinge fixings on the end stiles after enough cycles, especially on thinner single-skin doors. Rust starts at the bottom edge where road salt and meltwater sit off the car all winter, and works upward from the inside of the skin.
