Designing a Door for the Front of Your House
The hardest job in this village is not the one-off door. It is the three-car elevation where a double and a single sit side by side and have to read as one deliberate thing rather than two separate purchases.

Let the section heights fall out of step, or put four windows across the double and two on the single, and the front of the house looks assembled instead of designed. Most of the decisions below exist to stop that happening.
Matching a Double to a Single
Two doors of different widths only look like a pair when their horizontal lines run through. Section heights have to match so the joints continue across both doors, and any window row has to sit in the same section on each. Window count then follows width rather than staying equal — three lights on the single against four on the double usually reads better than two against four.
Decorative hardware works the same way. Strap hinges and handles get spaced by proportion rather than copied across at identical spacing, otherwise the narrower door ends up looking crowded while the wide one looks bare.
Overlay Carriage, Stamped Carriage, or Neither
A stamped carriage door is steel pressed to suggest planks and cross bracing. It is the practical option, it insulates well and it behaves like the good steel door it is. Up close it is clearly pressed steel, and on some houses that is completely fine.
An overlay door has real trim applied to the face — composite or clad battens, hinges and handles fitted over an insulated steel base. It reads as joinery from the pavement and holds up to being looked at from the drive. It is heavier, which changes the spring and opener specification, and the finish has to be one that survives twenty Illinois winters. Both are right answers for different houses.
Weight, Headroom and What the Opening Allows
Design and mechanics are one conversation, not two. A heavier insulated or overlay door needs springs wound for its actual weight, track and hinges rated for it, and an opener with the pull to move it. A chain drive that coped with a thin single-skin door will not necessarily cope with what replaces it.
That is why measurements come before drawings: headroom above the opening, side room for the vertical track, backroom under the ceiling, and a clear run for the opener rail. On the older ranch and split-level plans around the village, headroom is frequently the limiting number, and low-headroom track is the answer rather than compromising on the door.

Questions
Buffalo Grove questions about this job
How long does a custom door take from measure to fit?
Considerably longer than a stock door, because the sections are built to your specification rather than pulled from a warehouse. Several weeks is normal, and overlay doors with applied trim and a specified finish take longer again. You get a realistic date at the point of order, not an optimistic one.
Will real wood hold up in this climate?
It can, but only with maintenance. Timber moves with humidity and our winters swing hard, so a wood door wants refinishing on a schedule rather than when it starts to look tired. Clad and composite overlays give most of the appearance with far less upkeep, which is why most people land there.
Can I add decorative windows without losing insulation?
Partly. Any glazed section insulates less than a solid one, but insulated glass units limit the loss and keep the top section from becoming a cold bridge. Placement matters too — glazing in the top section only keeps the loss where it affects the garage least.
