The custom work here splits fairly neatly. Older ranches and split-levels near downtown are usually trying to look right for their era without looking like a period reproduction. The taller houses built on the older lots are usually trying to match a scale that stock doors do not come in.
A 1960s Ranch and a New Build Are Different Problems
A low, wide postwar ranch generally wants a door that stays quiet. Flush or narrow-ribbed sections, a single row of small windows if any at all, and a color that reads as part of the wall rather than as a feature. Heavy carriage hardware on a house like that looks bolted on, because it is.
The newer builds have the opposite problem. The opening is often eight feet high or more, sometimes two of them side by side, and stock proportions look thin against that much wall. This is where a real overlay earns its money: composite or wood cladding over an insulated steel core, with the stiles and rails laid out to line up with the trim and window mullions on the house itself.
Weight Is a Design Decision, Not Just a Finish
Every material choice adds or removes pounds, and pounds change the whole system behind the door. A full-view aluminum and glass door and a solid wood carriage door of the same opening size can differ enormously in weight, and each one needs its own spring sizing, its own drums, and an operator rated to lift it.
That is why we quote the door and the hardware together. A beautiful door hung on springs sized for the one it replaced will feel wrong from the first week and will fail early. If the design pushes the weight up, the torsion package, the track gauge and the opener all move up with it.
Glass, Which Way the Garage Faces, and Insulation
Windows are the most requested feature and the one most worth thinking through. A west-facing garage behind full glass bakes through the afternoon; the same door facing north is simply daylight. Frosted or obscured glazing gives you the light without giving the street an inventory of what is in the garage.
Insulation is a real decision here rather than a number on a spec sheet. An attached garage sharing a wall with a finished room, or one with a bonus room over it, justifies a thicker insulated core. A detached garage used for storage does not need the same door, and we would rather put that budget into the material and the finish than into performance nobody in the house will ever feel.

Does a real wood door hold up in this climate?
It does if it is built and finished for it and then maintained. Wood facing weather directly needs refinishing on a schedule, and the freeze-thaw swings here are hard on any coating.
