Designing a Garage Door That Fits Your Chicago Home
Chicago put most of its garages where nobody can see them. The alley grid means the average garage door faces the back of somebody else's garage rather than the street, and that fact changes what a custom door is for here. Then there is the other half of the city's housing: infill single-families and townhouses where the garage sits on the front elevation and the door dominates the facade.

Doors Nobody Sees From the Street
On a rear-lot garage the audience is you, your neighbours across the alley, and anyone standing in the yard. The look that tends to work is a carriage house treatment, with overlay boards and strap hardware on a steel or composite core, in a colour taken from the house's trim rather than from the door catalogue. Get the trim colour right and a bungalow's garage stops looking like an outbuilding.
Glazing needs a different decision here than on a street-facing door. A row of windows at eye level looks out onto a public alley in both directions, so obscured, reeded or frosted glass gives you the daylight without the display. Placing the glazing in the top section only is the other common answer.
Doors That Are the Whole Front of the House
On a front elevation the door competes with the entry door, the windows and the cladding, and it outsizes all of them. Full-view aluminium with tinted or frosted glass suits modern infill and reads as glazing rather than as a garage. Flush steel with a deep woodgrain finish does the same job for less. Wood is genuinely beautiful, with the caveat that a south or west elevation asks more of a finish than a sheltered one does.
Proportion is the thing people underestimate. A wide double opening on a narrow lot dominates the frontage, and breaking it visually with the stamping layout, the glazing line or a two-tone finish does more for the elevation than the material choice does.
Glass, Weight and What They Do to the Hardware
Custom doors are heavier than the door coming off, sometimes considerably. Full-view aluminium with real glass, solid wood, and overlay treatments all add weight, and everything behind the door has to be resized for it. Springs are calculated to the finished weight, not estimated. Hinges and track may need to step up a gauge. An opener sized for a light single-skin door will run hot lifting something substantially heavier.
The physical envelope constrains the design as much as taste does. Headroom, backroom and the side room beside each jamb decide what track can be used, and a custom door is not the moment to discover the ceiling is too low. Those get measured before anything is drawn, and lead times on custom orders are longer than stock, so the measure happens early.

Can a garage door be made to suit a Chicago bungalow without looking like a costume?
Yes, and restraint is the trick. Bungalows respond to simple proportions, a colour drawn from the existing trim or brick, and modest hardware. The versions that look wrong are usually the ones with heavy decorative ironwork on a house that never had any.
Is a wood door a poor idea in this climate?
It is a commitment rather than a bad idea. Wood handles the temperature swing perfectly well, but the finish is what wears, and a door taking direct afternoon sun and driven rain will need refinishing on a cycle. Composite and steel with a woodgrain finish get close visually with none of that upkeep.
There is a roof deck over my garage. Does that change the door?
It changes the specification more than the styling. A garage with occupied space or a deck above it is a different structural and thermal situation, so insulation value and how the door seals at the head and jambs matter more, and the framing above the opening needs looking at before anything heavier goes in.
