Lift Cable Repairs on Chicago Garage Doors
A door that lifts crooked, with one top corner running ahead of the other, has usually lost a cable. The lift cables run from the bottom bracket on each side up to a drum beside the spring shaft. When one parts or unwinds, the door tilts, binds in the track and stops being safe to run.

Cable work is steady business for us in Chicago, and most of it traces back to two causes: corrosion at the bottom of the cable, and a spring failure that took the cable with it. Both are same-day repairs on the great majority of doors.
Road Salt Is What Kills Cables Here
The bottom few inches of a lift cable live exactly where the water is. Salt comes into the garage on tyres and boots all winter, melts onto the slab, and pools against the bottom bracket and the cable end. Over enough seasons the strands corrode from the inside out.
That failure gives almost no warning. A rusted cable looks perfectly fine from six feet away and carries full load right up until it does not. If your garage floods, drains badly, or takes a salted car in every winter, the bottom hardware is worth a look while a technician is already there for something else.
When the Cable Jumps the Drum
The other common version is a cable that has come off its drum rather than snapped. It happens when the door lands on something, a bin, a bike, a ridge of ice frozen to the slab, so one side stops while the other keeps unwinding. You get slack, then a loop, then a door hanging by one side.
Do not run the opener to try to shake it back. The door is already loaded unevenly and forcing it bends track, breaks the second cable or drops the door. Cables go back on in pairs, the drums get re-seated and set to matched tension, and the door is levelled and cycled by hand before it is handed over.
The Spring Is Often the Real Story
A cable rarely fails on its own. When a torsion spring lets go the shaft spins, the drums unwind and the cables come off with them, so the cable is the symptom and the spring is the cause. Replacing the cable alone on that door buys you a fortnight before the same call comes back.
So the whole counterbalance gets checked: spring condition and cycle wear, drum seating, bottom brackets, bearing plates and the end of the shaft. If the cables genuinely are the only thing wrong, we say so and fix only that. The estimate is free and the price is agreed before work starts.

No. The remaining cable is carrying a load meant for two and the door is travelling twisted in the track, which is exactly how doors come off the rails altogether. Leave it down and book the repair.
Why do cables rust through here when the rest of the door looks fine?
Because the damage is right at the bottom, where salty meltwater sits against the bottom bracket every winter. The visible run of cable higher up can look like new while the last few inches are nearly gone.
The door came down hard and the cables are hanging loose. Is the door ruined?
Usually not. In most cases the cables, drums and often a spring need replacing while the door itself is fine. What we check for is a bent bottom section, a twisted bottom bracket and damaged vertical track, because those change the job.
