Lift cables run from the bottom bracket on each side of the door up to a drum at the end of the torsion shaft. They are what actually carries the door. The springs only supply the counterweight that makes it liftable.
Why cables give out in unheated garages
Cable is stranded steel and it fails from the ends inward. The bottom bracket is where the trouble usually starts, because that fitting sits an inch off a slab that gets wet from snowmelt and tracked-in road salt every winter. Detached garages on Elgin's older streets, unheated and with a floor that never fully dries between January and March, are the classic case.
The other failure point is the drum itself. If the cable jumps out of its groove, or the drum set screws slip on the shaft, one side winds faster than the other and the door racks in the opening. From the driveway that looks identical to a frayed cable, but it is a different fix.
Stop using the opener
Once a cable is broken or off, every press of the button makes things worse. The opener keeps pulling on a door that is now binding sideways, which bends the top section, pulls hinges out of the panel and can drag the second cable off its drum as well.
Pull the release cord and leave the door where it is. If it is down, leave it down. If it is up and sitting stable, leave it up rather than trying to wrestle it closed.
How we put it right
We clamp and support the door, take the tension out of the system, then replace both cables as a pair. Fitting only the broken one leaves you with mismatched stretch and an uneven door again within months.
The drums get reset and leveled so both sides lift together, the bottom brackets are checked for rust and swapped where they are pitted, and the springs are rewound and rebalanced. Last thing, we cycle the door by hand and then on the opener, watching that the bottom edge stays level all the way up and back down.

The cable just came off the drum. Can it be wound back on?
It has to be, but not by hand with the door where it is. The system needs supporting and the spring tension released first, or the door can drop the moment the cable frees up. We also want to know why it came off, because a cable that jumps a groove usually has a loose drum or a shaft out of level behind it.
Only one cable broke. Why change both?
Both cables have flexed the same number of times over the same drums and sat in the same damp garage. The surviving one is the same age with the same corrosion working through it. Changing it while the tension is already off saves you a second visit a few months down the line.
Is a door with a broken cable safe to leave hanging?
It is safer than trying to move it, but treat the space under the door as off limits. Keep children and pets away, do not park under it, and do not use the opener. If the door is hanging at a sharp angle and looks like it could come out of the track, tell us that when you call so we treat it as urgent.
