The four numbers that define your spring
A torsion spring is not a generic item. The right one is described by four figures: the diameter of the wire it is wound from, the inside diameter of the coil, the overall length of the spring, and the direction it is wound. Change any one of them and the door is either too heavy to lift by hand or so light it creeps up off the floor on its own.
Those numbers come from the door, not the opening. A single-car door on an east-side ranch is light and often runs one spring. A wide insulated double on a newer house past Randall Road is a different calculation entirely: two springs, heavier wire, and a shaft that will not tolerate a mismatched pair for long. Wood doors, which still turn up on the older properties around Gifford Park, weigh far more than their size suggests and get sized accordingly.
Ten thousand cycles and an average Elgin household
Springs are rated in cycles. One cycle is one open plus one close. A standard spring is built for roughly ten thousand of them, which sounds enormous until you count. Two people leaving and coming back is four cycles. Add a school run, a delivery and a trip to the store and you are at seven or eight before dinner.
That arithmetic is why springs fail in year six or seven rather than year twenty, and why the failure so often surprises people. If your garage is the door the household actually uses, a higher-cycle spring set is worth asking about at replacement time. It is a different wire size and a longer spring on the same shaft, fitted in the same visit, and it changes the interval you are on.
What happens after the new springs go on
Swapping the steel is the middle of the job. The cables come off the drums to do it, so both drums have to be reset to matching tension afterward. Get that wrong by even a turn and the door climbs crooked, rides hard on one track and starts chewing a cable at the drum.
Then the door is balanced by hand. Disconnected from the opener, lifted to about waist height and released, it should stay put with no drift either way. Last, the opener gets looked at, because it has probably spent months fighting a tired spring with its force settings turned up to compensate. Left cranked, those settings defeat the auto-reverse, so they come back down and the reversal gets tested before we pack up.

How do I know whether my door is torsion or extension?
Stand inside with the door closed and look at the wall above the opening. Torsion means a steel shaft running across the header with one or two tightly wound springs on it. Extension means two long springs stretched along the ceiling above the horizontal tracks instead, with nothing above the door.
Is a high-cycle spring set actually worth it?
It depends on your usage. For a two-car household that enters the house through the garage several times a day, yes, because the standard rating is the thing limiting your interval. For a garage that opens twice a week to get the mower out, no, and we will tell you so.
Does an unheated garage shorten spring life?
Cold does not break a healthy spring, but it finishes off a fatigued one, which is why so many of these calls land in deep winter. The bigger factor in an unheated detached garage is moisture and surface rust on the coils. A light film of lubricant wiped along the spring twice a year slows that down.
