Torsion Springs Measured and Replaced Across Aurora

Getting the Four Numbers Off a Broken Spring

Wire diameter is read by pushing twenty coils tight together, measuring across them and dividing. Inside diameter is stamped on the cone or taken off the shaft, usually 1.75, 2.00 or 2.25 inches. Wound length has to be measured with the break closed up, because a snapped spring unwinds and reads long. Wind direction comes from the cone colour and which side of the shaft it sits on.

That work takes a few minutes and it is the difference between a door that balances and one that fights its opener for the next several years. Builder springs on the newer east-side doors were frequently sized for bare steel with no allowance for the insulation, glazing and hardware that came with the door, so the correct replacement is often not an identical copy of what came out.

One Snapped, Both Get Changed

On a two-spring door the pair was wound to the same cycle rating and has done the same number of lifts. When the first lets go, the second is not far behind it, and running a door on one fresh spring and one tired one drives the imbalance straight into the cables and the drums. Both come off together.

Cycle rating is worth discussing while the door is apart. A standard spring is built around ten thousand open-and-close cycles. If your garage is the door the household actually uses, four or five times a day, that number is spent faster than it sounds, and a high-cycle spring carries the same load on heavier wire with more coils.

Low Headroom in the Alley Garages

The detached garages behind Aurora's older blocks were framed tight. There is often only a few inches of clear space between the top of the opening and the joists, which rules out a standard torsion assembly and calls for a low-headroom bracket or a rear-mount arrangement. Better to know that before anyone starts.

Those garages are unheated, and bare steel in an unheated building collects condensation right through the winter. End bearing plates seize, the shaft stops turning freely, and the spring wears out early doing work the bearings should be sharing. Bearings get checked on every spring call here.

There is a gap of about an inch in the spring above my door. Is the rest of it still usable?

No. That gap is the break. Both halves either side of it have already served their full working life at the same rate, so there is no useful tension left and the spring cannot be rejoined. It comes off the shaft and a correctly sized one goes on.

Can you just fit a heavier spring so it lasts longer?

Not heavier — longer-lived. A high-cycle spring uses thicker wire and more coils to carry the same door weight with less stress per cycle. The balance stays identical, the spring simply has more life in it. It is a sensible upgrade on a garage used as the main way into the house.

My door has a single spring on the bar. Should there be two?

Single-spring setups are common on lighter doors and they work. Two springs split the load, stop the shaft twisting under an uneven pull, and leave the door partly supported if one fails. On a wide or insulated door we will usually suggest the pair.
