Torsion Springs and the Shaft They Ride On
A torsion spring does not pull. It twists. The spring sits on a steel shaft mounted above the opening, and winding it stores energy in the wire as torque. Cable drums at either end of that shaft turn the twist back into lift on the way up. None of that work belongs to the opener, which is why a door with a failed spring will not move no matter how long you hold the button.

In Crown Point the shaft assembly is usually where the surprises are. On a detached garage off one of the older streets, the framing that shaft is bolted through can be original to the building. In the newer sections toward Winfield and St. John the shaft is barely broken in, but it is often carrying more door than the spring on it was chosen for.
The Four Numbers Stamped Into the Job
A torsion spring is defined by wire diameter, inside diameter, overall length and wind direction. Those four figures set how much lift the spring produces per turn, and they are picked against the weighed and measured door, not against whatever is closest on the truck.
Get the spec wrong and the door reports it the same afternoon. Over-sprung, it floats away from the floor and slams into the top of its travel. Under-sprung, the opener hauls the last stretch and the door drops the final foot faster than it should. Neither is a settling-in period. Both are a spring that does not match the door.
What Fails Alongside the Spring
When a spring lets go, the energy in it has to go somewhere. It goes into the shaft, the bearings and the drums. So a replacement is not just a swap: the centre bracket bearing gets spun by hand for roughness, the end bearing plates get checked for elongated bolt holes, and the drums are inspected where the cable seats. A scored drum will chew a new cable inside a season.
Older garages add one more check. The header behind the centre bracket has to be solid enough to take the load. On garages around the square we sometimes find lag bolts run into soft or split framing, or into a backing board that was never sized for a torsion conversion. That gets sorted before anything is wound.
One Spring, or a Matched Pair
Wide doors are usually counterbalanced by two springs rather than one. It is not only about total lift. A pair splits the load across the shaft, keeps the drums loaded evenly, and means a single failure leaves some counterbalance in the system rather than none at all.
Where the garage is the household's main way in and out, it is worth talking about heavier wire on a longer spring. Same lift, more metal, more openings before it fatigues. On a door that runs six or eight times a day, that decision matters more than anything else on the estimate.

Can a torsion spring be re-wound instead of replaced?
Only if the spring itself is sound and has simply lost turns, which is uncommon. A spring that has cracked, stretched between coils, or has visible rust pitting is at the end of its working life and adding turns just loads a weakened wire.
The spring looks intact but the door feels heavy. Is that possible?
Yes. A drum set screw that has slipped, a cable that has unwound out of step with its partner, or a spring that has fatigued without visibly breaking will all produce a heavy door with nothing obvious to see from the floor. It gets diagnosed by weighing the door and checking the turn count.
My detached garage has springs down the sides. Can it be changed to torsion?
Often yes, but it depends on the headroom above the opening and on the framing behind the header. We measure both before quoting it, and if the space is not there we say so rather than forcing it.
