Grinding, Rattling and Binding Rollers
Sound tells you most of what you need to know. A rhythmic squeak that speeds up as the door speeds up is a roller bearing. Rollers take a particular beating in Lake County. Wheels carry road salt and grit into the garage all winter, it dries on the slab, and it works its way into the bearing race of any roller with an open cage. Unheated detached garages make that worse again, because the grease that was fine in October has stiffened by January.
Steel, Nylon, and What the Difference Buys
At the bottom of the range sit solid plastic rollers on a bare stem with no bearing at all. Above those, steel rollers with an exposed ball race, which are hard-wearing but noisy and open to grit. Above those, nylon-tyred rollers on a sealed bearing, usually specified by the number of ball bearings in the race.
The tyre material is what you hear. Nylon running on steel track is much quieter than steel on steel, which is why the upgrade is so obvious on an attached garage with a bedroom over it. The sealed bearing is what lasts, and in a garage that gets salt tracked into it every winter, sealed is the part that matters.
Wear You Can Spot From the Floor
Close the door and look along the roller stems. A worn roller sits with visible slack in its hinge and wobbles when you nudge it. Look at the wheel itself for flat spots, chips out of a nylon tyre, or a steel wheel that has gone shiny and undersized. Then look at the track: a bright polished stripe on the inside of the flange means a wheel has been riding the edge rather than rolling on its face.
One roller stays off limits. The bottom roller sits in the bottom bracket, and that bracket is held down by the lift cable under full spring tension. Nothing about that corner should be unbolted by anyone without the tools to hold the load first.
Doing the Job Without Dismantling the Door
Rollers come out section by section with the door closed, working from the hinges rather than from the track. On older doors the hinges usually get replaced at the same time, because the screw holes in the section stiles have wallowed out and a new roller in a sloppy hinge still rattles.
Once they are in, the door is run several times and watched at the curve, which is where a marginal roller shows itself first. Then the track fasteners are checked and the door is balance-tested, because a heavy door wears rollers faster than a light one and swapping the wheels without fixing that just resets the clock.

Should all the rollers be replaced, or only the bad ones?
Usually all of them. They have all done the same number of cycles, they are a small part of the visit once the technician is there, and a mixed set of old and new rollers gives you an inconsistent-feeling door.
Will new rollers on their own quieten a loud door?
Often, but not always. If the noise is loose hardware, a dry torsion spring, a worn opener gear or a bent track, new rollers will not touch it. That is why the door gets diagnosed by watching it run before anything is quoted.
My door has plain plastic wheels with no bearing. Is that a problem?
It is the builder-grade fitting and it works, but it wears quickly and it is noisy. On a door that opens several times a day, moving to a sealed nylon roller is one of the smaller changes that makes an immediate difference.
