Pulley bearings seize and then saw a flat into the cable. S-hooks open up under load. The rear anchor, on an older detached garage, is sometimes lagged into framing that has spent decades taking on damp and letting it back out again. We replace hardware in kind rather than reusing whatever came off, because a new spring on a worn pulley is a short-lived repair.
Low Headroom Is Why These Doors Still Exist
Extension springs need no shaft above the opening, which is exactly why they were fitted on garages with only a few inches between the top of the door and the ceiling joists. Some of the alley garages here have almost nothing to spare.
So before anyone suggests converting a door to torsion, the headroom gets measured. Where the space exists, conversion is a genuine upgrade. Where it does not, the right answer is a properly specified extension set with sound pulleys, fresh cables and a containment cable threaded through each spring so that a future break stays inside the assembly.

How do I tell extension springs from torsion springs without getting on a ladder?
Look at where the springs sit. Torsion springs are above the door on a bar that spans the opening. Extension springs sit off to the sides, one above each horizontal track, stretched front to back. From the middle of the garage floor the difference is obvious.
A spring snapped and put a mark on the wall. Is that normal?
It is what an unrestrained extension spring does. There is a lot of stored energy in a stretched spring and nothing to contain it when the wire parts. That is the specific hazard a containment cable is there to remove, and it is the first thing we check on any older door.
Can I lift the door by hand until you arrive?
Better not to. With one spring gone, one side of the door is dead weight and the door will rack in the opening as it moves. If a vehicle is trapped, leave it and tell us when you book so it gets prioritised.
