Side-Mounted Springs on Older Bolingbrook Doors

Extension springs do not sit above the door. They run horizontally alongside the upper tracks, one each side, stretching as the door comes down and pulling back as it rises. If you can see two long springs running back into the garage with a pulley at each end, that is the system you have.

The Cable Through the Middle Is Not Optional

An extension spring under load is a stretched length of steel holding a lot of energy. When it breaks it does not simply drop. It whips, and it travels the length of the garage at speed. A containment cable threaded through the coil and anchored at both ends turns that event into a spring that sags harmlessly on its own cable.

Every door we work on leaves with those cables in place. On original 1970s installs they are frequently absent altogether. On plenty of others they were fitted once and never re-anchored after a later repair. Threading them takes minutes and it is the single most useful thing on the whole assembly.

Fitted in Pairs, Because They Stretch Together

Extension springs lose their pull gradually rather than all at once. Both sides have run the same number of cycles, so when one gives up the other is measurably weaker than it was, whatever it looks like. Put a new spring beside a tired one and the door lifts unevenly, which loads one track, one cable and one set of rollers harder than the other for the rest of its life.

Pulleys and S-hooks get the same look while the springs are off. Pulley bearings seize, sheaves wear a groove that starts eating cable, and hooks open up under years of load. Those parts are small next to the callback they prevent.

When Converting to Torsion Actually Makes Sense

Not every extension door needs converting and we will not push it. A well-fitted extension setup with containment cables on a light single door is fine as it stands. The conversation is worth having when a heavier replacement door has been hung on an old extension setup, when there is headroom for a shaft, or when the clutter of springs, pulleys and cables in the side space keeps causing trouble.

Torsion gives a steadier lift, better balance across a wide opening and far less hardware hanging where you park. It costs more up front and it needs the room above the door. We measure, lay out both options and let you decide.

Usually the pulley or the cable rather than the spring. A seized sheave or a cable that has slipped out of its groove changes the geometry on one side only, and the door leans as it lifts.

How long should a set of extension springs last?

They are rated in cycles rather than years, so it depends entirely on use. A household that comes and goes through the garage will get through a rating far faster than one opening the door twice a day. Ten to fifteen years is common and considerably less on a busy door.

The springs are this old. Does that mean the whole door is due?

No. Springs are a wear part on a door that is otherwise sound. If the sections, track and rollers are in reasonable order, new springs are a straightforward repair and the door carries on.
