Rewinding the Torsion Shaft Above a Bolingbrook Door

Four Measurements, Not a Guess at the Size
Wire gauge is read with a caliper across twenty coils, not judged by eye. Inside diameter comes off the cone. Length is taken from the relaxed spring with the shaft still in place. Wind direction is decided by which end of the shaft the spring lives on, because left-wound and right-wound springs are not interchangeable and a pair fitted the wrong way round will unwind itself on the first run.
Cycle rating belongs in the same conversation. Builder-grade springs are commonly rated near ten thousand cycles, which is one open and one close. Heavier wire on a larger coil, sized for the same door, buys a good deal more life. What Else Comes Off the Shaft While It Is Down
A torsion spring lets go violently and the shock travels along the shaft. End bearings get flat-spotted, the centre plate loosens against the header, and cable drums pick up scoring where a cable jumped its groove under load. Fit new springs onto worn bearings and you get a door that runs rough from day one plus a second call inside the year.
So the shaft gets inspected while there is no tension on it. Bearings either spin free or they get changed. Drums are checked at the groove. Cables come off the drums and are run through by hand along their whole length, because whatever broke the spring often nicked a strand on the way past.
Low Headroom in the Older Bays
A lot of the 1970s garages in the older parts of the village were framed tight to the ceiling. There is barely room between the header and the joists for a standard torsion assembly, and on some of them the original installer improvised in ways that are now quietly failing.
Those jobs need the correct hardware rather than force: a low-headroom bracket set, or the springs relocated behind the horizontal track on a rear-mount shaft. Both are ordinary work. Neither comes in a stock spring kit, which is why the measuring happens before anything is ordered.

The spring snapped and now the door will not move at all. Is that normal?
Yes. The springs carry the weight of the door and the opener only guides it. With a spring gone, the motor is being asked to drag the full weight up the track, and most units stall or trip out. Leave it alone and call, because repeatedly forcing it is how openers get destroyed.
One long spring or two shorter ones. Does it matter which I have?
Either can be correct. What matters is that the total torque matches the weight of the door and that the wind directions are right for the shaft. Two springs on a wide door mean it will not slam down if one fails. A single spring on a narrow door is perfectly normal.
Can the existing drums and bearings just stay in place?
If they check out, yes, and we will say so. If a bearing has play in it or a drum is grooved, changing it while the shaft is already stripped takes minutes. Coming back for it later does not.
