A New Door on a Twenty-Year-Old Motor
This is the most common tangle we unpick here. A household replaces a tired door with a properly insulated one, keeps the opener because it was still working, and six months later the motor is groaning, stopping short of the floor or tripping its overload. The new door is heavier. If the springs were matched to it and the force limits were reset afterwards, a sound motor copes without complaint. If neither happened, the motor is hauling a door nobody counterbalanced for it.
So the first thing a technician does is disconnect the opener and work the door by hand. Stiff, dragging, or unwilling to hold position means the motor is not the fault, and swapping it would buy you nothing but a louder version of the same problem.
Screw Drives, Chain Drives and What Fails in Each
Screw-drive units, common in Bolingbrook's older attached garages, turn a threaded rod down the length of the rail. They are strong and they hate the cold: the grease on that rod stiffens in an unheated garage and the door crawls through January. Cleaned down and re-greased with the right product, most of them come back. Chain drives strip the plastic drive gear inside the head instead, which announces itself as a motor humming away cheerfully while the door sits still.
The newer belt and wall-mount units tend to fail electronically rather than mechanically. Logic boards, capacitors and radio receivers give out, and on a wall-mount motor the cable-tension monitor will stop the unit dead the moment it senses slack, which is a safety feature working correctly rather than a breakdown. Those parts ride on the van.
The Cheap Faults Get Ruled Out First
Before anything is opened up, the obvious gets checked, because a fair number of calls end right there. Safety eyes knocked out of line by a recycling bin, a bike or a snow blower will leave the door reversing every time it nears the floor. A power cut can wipe stored remote codes. A wall control that works while the remotes do not points at batteries or the receiver rather than the motor. Mention which of those you have already ruled out when you ring, and the van gets packed with that in mind.
When the fault really is inside the unit, repair usually wins. Gears, boards, capacitors, trolleys, chains and receivers are all replaceable parts. Replacement gets recommended when spares have dried up for that model, when the header timber it hangs from has cracked, or when a small motor is being asked to run a wide door it was never sized for. Either way you hear the reasoning and approve the price before work starts.

The motor head is flashing and the door comes straight back up. Where do I start?
On most units a flashing head light is the safety-eye circuit reporting a broken or misaligned beam. Look first for anything leaning against either bracket down at floor level, then check whether the small indicator on each eye is steady rather than blinking. Brackets drift out of line on their own over a season. We realign them and then test the reverse against an obstruction on the floor, which is how that function is meant to be proved.
It works from the wall button but not from the remote in the car.
That splits the problem cleanly. The motor, the door and the wiring are all fine, so you are looking at the transmitter or the receiver. Batteries first, then re-pairing the remote. If the unit has lost codes for everything, a keypad included, the receiver board is the usual culprit and that is a repair rather than a new opener.
The opener got much louder over the winter. Is it about to fail?
Not necessarily. Noise more often comes from worn rollers, loose hinges and hardware that has shaken itself slack than from the motor. A screw drive running on cold, stiff grease is another common one. All of that is checked before anyone talks about a replacement unit.
Is an opener from the nineties still worth repairing?
It depends on the unit and on what has failed. Some of those motors are genuinely durable and a gear kit or a board puts them right. The honest counterpoint is spares and safety features: anything predating photo-eye sensors should be replaced rather than nursed along, and we will say so.
