Everything died after a power cut. Does that mean a new opener?
Not necessarily. A surge usually takes out the board or the receiver rather than the motor, and on a reasonably modern unit that is a parts repair. The age of the head is what decides it, and the technician checks the motor, rail and gear before recommending either route.
The door starts down then jumps back up before it lands. What causes that?
Almost always the safety sensors or the down-force setting, not the motor. A bumped bracket, a dirty lens or a corroded connection breaks the beam and the opener reverses by design. Cold weather is the other cause, because stiff grease makes the door harder to move and an opener already near its force limit gives up partway.
My garage has flooded before. Does that put the opener at risk?
The head itself is up on the ceiling and normally fine. What suffers is everything low down: the sensor brackets and wiring, the wall console cable and any outlet near floor level. Sensor wiring and brackets are straightforward to renew, and anything to do with the outlet itself is a job for an electrician.
