Lubricating a Door in a Damp Des Plaines Garage

That changes the choice of product. A thin penetrating spray quietens a door for a fortnight and leaves nothing behind afterwards. What you want is something that stays where it is put.
Where It Goes, Point by Point
The list is short and it never changes. Every hinge knuckle. The stem of each roller where it passes through its bracket. The three bearings carrying the torsion shaft, one at either end plate and one at the centre anchor. The full length of the spring. The lock bar, and on an extension setup the pulley wheels too. Pivots and bearings take a garage-door white lithium or silicone product. The springs want nothing more than a thin wipe of oil, which does more for spring life in a damp garage than anything else mentioned on this page.
Then wipe the excess off. Lubricant sitting proud on a surface collects grit, and grit inside a bearing does more harm than dryness ever did.
The Parts That Have to Stay Dry
The track is not a lubrication point. A roller needs to turn against that surface rather than slide along it, and oil in the channel guarantees the second by mixing with dust into a grey paste. Wipe the tracks out with a rag and leave them dry. Nylon wheels want nothing on the wheel itself either, only on the stem and the bearing sitting behind it.
Keep it off the photo-eye lenses, off the belt on a belt-drive opener, and off rubber seals. And leave the water-displacing aerosol with the red straw on the shelf: it strips out what is already there and leaves bare steel behind, which in a damp garage is worse than having done nothing.
Chain, Belt and Screw Drives Are Not the Same
A chain drive wants a light oil on the chain, not grease, and not much of it. A belt drive wants absolutely nothing on the belt. A screw drive is the exception that catches people out: the threaded rail carries the load directly and needs a specific low-temperature grease made for that job.
That matters in an unheated garage. A screw-drive opener that groans and slows in January is very often carrying the wrong grease from a previous well-meant service, rather than failing.

How often do the moving parts need doing?

Then the source is wear, and no product will reach it. Walk the door up slowly by hand, work out which part of the travel the noise belongs to, and look hard at the hinge and roller sitting there.
