Lift Cable Repair in Des Plaines Garages
One corner drops, the other stays put, and the door hangs crooked in the tracks with a loop of steel wire dangling loose beside it. That is a lift cable, and on the streets closest to the river it is the failure we are called out for most.

Cables carry the weight of the door between the spring drums at the top and the brackets at the bottom corners. When one lets go the whole load shifts sideways in an instant, which is why an off-cable door usually damages something else on its way down.
Rust Starts at the Bottom Fitting
The lower end of the cable loops around a stud on the bottom bracket, an inch or two above the slab. In a garage that has taken water, that is the part sitting in it. Corrosion works into the strands where they are wound tightest, the wire quietly loses section, and it parts under load with no warning at all.
Cables rarely look dangerous before they go. What is worth looking for is a frayed strand or two standing proud of the lay, an orange stain running down from the bracket, or a cable that has gone stiff where it used to be flexible. If the garage has ever flooded, have them checked whether or not the door is misbehaving.
Off the Drum Is Not the Same as Snapped
Sometimes the cable is perfectly intact and has simply come off its drum. That happens when the door closes onto something, when a spring breaks, or when the door sits down long enough for the cable to go slack and jump the groove. Rewinding it is only half the job: the drums have to be set so both sides take up the same length, or the door hangs low at one corner and starts binding in the track.
Resetting a drum means working on a shaft still under spring tension. That is not a ladder-and-pliers job, and it is where most self-attempted cable fixes turn into a considerably larger repair.
What Goes Back On Alongside the Cables
Cables are changed as a pair. Both have taken identical loads for identical years, and a second failure on the other side within months is common enough that replacing just one is false economy. With the door down, the bottom brackets, drums and end bearings get inspected too, because a new cable running against a rough drum or a pitted bracket wears out the same way the old one did.
The door is then rebalanced and the opener's down-force reset. A door that has been limping along on damaged cables has usually had its travel limits nudged at some point to compensate, and those need putting back where they belong.

Questions
Des Plaines questions about this job
One corner of my door has dropped. Can I still run the opener?
No. With one cable gone the opener drags the door further out of square, which twists the sections, bends the track and can pull the good cable off its drum as well. Disconnect the opener with the release cord, leave the door where it is, and call.
The cables look rusty but the door still works. How urgent is it?
Urgent enough to book rather than ignore. Surface rust on the outside of a cable means the strands underneath have been corroding for a while, and there is no gradual warning stage before one parts. Replacing a rusted cable is a small visit. Dealing with what happens when it snaps is not.
If a cable has failed, do the springs need doing at the same time?
Often, though not always. A snapped spring frequently throws the cable off the drum, in which case the spring is the actual fault. And where damp has eaten one, the springs overhead in the same garage are usually corroding too. Both get inspected, and you are told which genuinely need changing and which do not.
