Lift cables carry the weight of the door from the bottom bracket up to the drums on the spring shaft. They fail more often in Evanston than they ought to, and the reason usually has more to do with where the garage sits than with the cable itself.
Rust starts at the bottom bracket
The lowest couple of feet of an unheated detached garage is the wet part of the building. Snow drops off the car, road salt comes in on the tyres, and an alley slab that drains towards the door holds water against it. The lower cable fitting sits right in all of that and corrodes from inside the strands, where nothing shows.
By the time a cable looks fuzzy or has a strand standing proud, it has lost a serious share of its strength. Both cables get replaced together, because the second one has been standing in the same puddle through the same winters.
The drum is half the job
When a cable unwinds off its drum, the groove and the set screws take a beating. A drum with a chewed groove will shed the new cable again within weeks. Both drums, the set screws and the shaft get checked for scoring before anything is wound back on.
Winding has to be even as well. If one drum takes up more cable than the other, the door rides low on one side, drags against the track and pushes the load back onto whichever cable is doing the extra work. Equal tension is the difference between a repair that holds and one that repeats.
Why a crooked door should not be run again
With one cable gone, all the spring tension is pulling through the remaining side. Running the opener now twists the door in the opening, can jump a roller clear of the track and can drop the door with nothing left holding it.
Leave it where it is, and do not pull the emergency release on a door hanging at an angle. Without the cable the door is no longer balanced, and letting the trolley go can let the whole thing come down. That part waits for the technician.

It has to be rewound properly, with the spring tension released first and the drum inspected for damage. Pushing a loose cable back into the groove with the spring still loaded is how hands get caught. The cable itself is often reusable if it has not been kinked.
How long should lift cables last on a garage like mine?
Longer than most people expect if the garage stays dry, and a good deal less if it does not. In an unheated building with salt and meltwater sitting at the door, it is worth looking at them for rust every year or two rather than assuming they are fine.
One side hangs lower even though both cables look intact. Why?
Usually uneven drum winding, or a bottom bracket that has started to pull out of a rotted bottom rail. Both are common on the older wooden doors around here, and both need sorting before the cable takes the blame.
