Custom Garage Doors for Evanston Homes and Alleys
In Evanston, custom usually begins as a measurement problem and only later becomes a style one. Garages built before doors came in standard widths produce openings nothing stock will fit: an inch or two narrow, a few inches short, out of square by enough to matter. A door made to that opening is not an indulgence. It is the only thing that will seal.

The style question is real as well, and it is worth deciding early where the door will actually be seen from. Most garages here face an alley. Some face the street from a side drive. A few sit on the front elevation of newer construction. Those three situations justify very different doors.
Where the Door Is Seen From
An alley-facing garage is looked at by you, your neighbors, and whoever collects the garbage. Insulation, a solid steel skin, a seal that holds and a color that sits well against the brick will do more for you there than carriage hardware nobody will ever stand close enough to notice.
A garage on a side drive is part of the view from the street and should agree with the house: panel proportion, window placement, whether there are windows at all. A door on a new-build front elevation is doing as much visual work as the front door, and that is where full custom sizing, glazing and non-standard finishes genuinely earn their place.
Matching a House Older Than the Garage Door Itself
Frame Victorians, brick two-flats, foursquares and bungalows all want different things from a garage. The reliable move on older Evanston houses is a sectional door with an overlay that reads as a pair of swing-out carriage doors. The door still runs up and over on tracks and still takes an opener, but the face carries the proportions the house expects.
If the property is in one of the city's historic districts, changes visible from outside go through a review before they happen, so the sensible order of operations is to settle the design on paper and get it confirmed before anything is ordered. We will put the drawings and specifications together for that conversation.
Material Choices This Close to the Lake
Real wood is beautiful and it is a commitment. It sits close to the water here, in an unheated building, and it wants refinishing on a cycle rather than being left to it. If nobody in the household is going to do that, a composite or a wood-look steel with a good factory finish will still be doing its job long after a neglected wood door has swelled at the bottom.
For a door that stays closed most of the winter, insulation is about more than heat. A single-skin steel door drums, sweats on the inside face and dents from a shopping cart. A two- or three-layer door is stiffer, quieter, and holds its shape better across a wide opening.

Questions
Evanston questions about this job
How long does a custom door take to arrive?
Longer than stock: weeks rather than days, depending on the manufacturer, the finish and the time of year. You get the lead time in writing before committing, and the existing door stays in use until the new one is on site.
Can you make a door for an opening that is not square?
The door itself is made square and the opening is dealt with separately. That normally means new jambs, packing to bring the track plumb, and a bottom seal chosen to take up the difference at the slab. Skipping that is why an expensive door can still let daylight through.
Can I keep the look of my old wood door but get something easier to live with?
One of the more common requests here. Photograph the existing door before it comes off, including a close view of the panel profile and any hardware, and the replacement can be specified to follow it closely in a lower-maintenance material.
