Cedar or mahogany gives the best result and asks the most of you afterward. A well-proportioned composite or grained steel door beats a badly detailed wood one every time.
Weight is the constraint nobody mentions
Every design decision adds pounds. Real wood, overlay cladding, insulated glass, a thicker polyurethane core, decorative ironwork, all of it lands on the same shaft and the same motor. A custom door can comfortably finish at twice the weight of the one it replaces.
So the spring package gets recalculated rather than reused. Wire size, drum size and the number of springs all come from the finished weight of the door. Past a certain point a standard trolley opener stops being the right machine, and a jackshaft unit mounted at the end of the torsion shaft handles a heavy door better while freeing the ceiling. If a quote for a heavy custom door says nothing about springs or the opener, it is not a complete quote.
Review boards, HOA rules and low headroom
If the house sits within one of Elgin's designated historic districts, exterior changes can fall under city design review. That is worth confirming with the city before an order is placed rather than after a custom door has been built. Newer subdivisions run their own version of the same thing through architectural guidelines, which typically govern color, panel style and whether glazing is allowed at all.
The other gate is hardware. Older Elgin garages regularly come up short on clearance above the opening, which does not rule out a custom door but does change the track it hangs on, low-headroom or double-track hardware instead of standard lift.
