We measure the opening, the headroom above it, the backroom behind it and the sideroom on either side, then order to those numbers. Getting that wrong is how people end up with a door that fouls the opener rail or will not seal at the floor.
What we check in an older Elgin garage
Detached garages in the older parts of town are frequently non-standard. Openings turn up at eight feet, at nine, and at sizes in between that were clearly framed on site rather than ordered from a list. Headroom is often tight because the rafters sit low over the opening.
Low-headroom track and a double-track setup handle most of that. Where a garage has settled and the opening is no longer square, we tell you before anything is ordered, because a door hung in an out-of-square opening will never seal evenly along the slab.
Insulated or not
For a detached garage used mainly for storage, an uninsulated steel door is honest value and there is no reason to push past it. For an attached garage with a room over it, or a garage used as a workshop through a Fox Valley winter, insulation earns its keep. It also stiffens the panel and cuts the drumming noise thin steel makes.
Insulated doors are heavier. That changes the spring specification and sometimes the opener too, and both of those get settled at the quote stage rather than turning up as a surprise on fitting day.
Matching the street
The historic streets near downtown carry a lot of Victorian and early 1900s frame houses, and a flat white panel door on the alley behind one of them looks wrong from thirty feet away. Carriage-house styling with the right window layout sits far better, without needing an actual swing-out door.
On the newer west-side subdivisions the questions are different: color match to the trim, whether to run windows in the top section, and which hardware. We bring samples and let you hold them against the house in daylight rather than choosing off a screen.
The day of the fit
The old door and track come out, new track is set plumb to the opening, sections go up one at a time and the springs are wound to the finished weight of the door. Most single and double residential doors are a one-day job.

Can a new door look right on an older Elgin house?
Yes. Carriage-house and recessed-panel steel doors are made to read as traditional from the street while still running on modern track and springs. The window pattern and the trim color do most of the work, and from the alley the difference is not obvious.
Does a new door mean I need a new opener?
Not automatically. If your existing opener is sound and the new door weighs about the same, it carries over. If you are going from a light uninsulated door to a heavy insulated one, we check the opener has the capacity before reusing it.
What happens to my old door?
We take it away, along with the old track, springs and hardware, as part of the job. You do not need to arrange disposal or leave anything out at the curb.
