Older openings are rarely a catalogue size
Frame garages built in the first half of the last century were sized to whatever the carpenter was working to, not to a modern stock width. A good number come up an inch or two off, and plenty have settled since, so the opening measures wider at the bottom than the top. That gets recorded properly and dealt with in the fit, either with a made-to-size door or by squaring the frame before anything is hung on it.
The jamb material matters as much as the numbers. Old timber that has taken decades of weather off the alley will not hold a track lag reliably, and there is no sense hanging a new door on wood that is going to let go. Where it needs replacing we say so at the measure, not on fitting day.
Choosing a door for the street it stands on
Around the historic core, a plain flush panel on a detached garage reads wrong next to the house. Carriage-style doors with the right glass and hardware sit far better on those streets, and they come as ordinary sectional doors now, so they lift on a normal opener rather than swinging out into the alley.
It runs the other way round on the newer builds. Builder doors go in at the cheapest specification the plan allowed, often uninsulated single-skin steel on a garage sharing a wall with a bedroom or a bonus room. An insulated door with a proper thermal break is quieter through that wall and considerably stiffer across a wide opening, and stiffness is what keeps a double straight over the years.
How fitting day runs
The old door and its hardware come out complete. New track goes onto new fixings in sound timber, set plumb and level rather than following whatever the previous set was following. Springs are sized to the weight of the door that has just gone up, not to a chart. The opener is re-set to the new travel, or changed if it is not fit to drive a heavier door.
Before we leave, the door is balance-tested by hand, reverse-on-contact is checked, and the old steel and packaging go with us. You get shown the release cord and what it does.
