That points most people toward insulated steel, or toward a composite overlay on a steel core where the carriage look is wanted without the refinishing schedule. Real wood is a genuine option and it looks like nothing else, but on a south or west elevation it needs a maintenance commitment, and that should be said out loud before the order goes in rather than discovered in year three.

Every design decision has a mechanical consequence. Glazed sections are heavier than solid ones. A three-layer insulated section is heavier than a single-skin one. Overlay trim adds weight across the whole face of the door.

So the counterbalance gets specified against the finished door, not against the one that came off. That can mean heavier gauge track, a second spring on the shaft, heavier hinges, and an opener rated for the load. On a detached garage it can also mean checking that the header framing will take the new bracket loads. None of that is upselling; it is the difference between a heavy custom door that runs for years and one that eats springs.
