Designing a Door Around the Opening It Has to Fit
Custom door projects go wrong at the beginning, not the end. Somebody picks a style out of a brochure, the door is ordered, and only then does anyone measure the headroom, weigh the finished panel or work out what all that extra glass does to the spring calculation.

The order here is reversed. The opening is measured, the structure is assessed and the finished weight is worked out first, then the design is built inside what the garage will actually take. BH Garage Door does custom work throughout Aurora and the Fox Valley towns beside it — Oswego, Montgomery, North Aurora and Batavia.
Two Kinds of Street, Two Kinds of Door
The century-old blocks near the Fox River carry houses with real architectural detail and, behind them, garages nobody ever designed to be looked at. A carriage-style door — genuine wood, or steel pressed and finished to read as wood — is usually the right move on the house-facing ones. On an alley-facing garage the priorities move away from kerb appeal toward security, seal and how it copes with weather.
Out toward Eola Road and the Naperville border the doors are wide, front-facing and a large part of the elevation. Long-panel and flush designs sit well on those houses, and the decisions that matter become glazing layout, hardware and how the colour reads against the trim and the roof.
Weight, Glass and Insulation Are Structural Choices
Every design decision adds mass. Insulation, glazing, applied overlays and solid timber all make the door heavier, and the spring system, shaft, bearings and opener have to be specified against that finished weight rather than against a generic door of the same size.
Insulation deserves an honest conversation. On an attached garage with a room over it, an insulated door with a good perimeter seal changes how that room feels. On an unheated detached garage with a single-skin roof and gaps at the eaves, an insulated door on its own will not warm the space, and is better chosen for rigidity and quietness.
Headroom, Backroom and What the Garage Will Take
Standard track needs a set amount of clear space above the opening and a clear run of ceiling behind it. Plenty of the older garages here have neither. Low-headroom track, rear-mount torsion and jackshaft operators all exist to solve that, and each one changes what is possible with the door itself.
Obstructions get logged at the measure: light fittings, storage platforms, the opener rail, water pipes, roof structure. Bringing that back at the design stage costs nothing. Discovering it on installation day costs a good deal more.

Questions
Aurora questions about this job
Can I have a wood door on a detached garage that is not heated?
You can, on the understanding that wood moves. Unheated buildings swing hard between damp and dry here, and a timber door needs its finish maintained on both faces to stay stable. A steel or composite carriage door gives a similar look with less upkeep, and we will show you both.
How much glass can go in before it becomes a problem?
It is a weight and rigidity question rather than a fixed limit. Glazing adds mass and takes stiffness out of the section holding it, so the spring system is sized to the finished door and wide glazed sections may need reinforcement. That gets worked out before the order goes in.
How long does a custom door take to arrive?
Longer than a stock door, and it varies by manufacturer, finish and glazing. You get a realistic lead time when the order is placed rather than an optimistic one, and the existing door stays in service until the new one is on site.
