Old Framing Moves and Takes the Track With It
A track is only ever as straight as what it is bolted to. In the post-war garages across Des Plaines the vertical track is lagged into a timber jamb and the horizontal track hangs from angle iron fixed up into the ceiling joists. Timber that has been wet at the base loses its grip on those lag screws, the fixings ease off, and the track drifts a fraction out of parallel.
You feel that long before you see it. The door shudders at the same point on every cycle, one side squeals, and eventually a roller pops out at the curve. The fix is rehanging the track to the correct spacing with fixings landing in sound material. Running the old screws back into worn holes buys a couple of weeks.
Bumper Damage on a Narrow Drive
The other common cause is straightforward contact. Drives here are often short, and on the older streets they are shared or tight against a neighbour's, so cars reverse and turn in close quarters and the bottom of the vertical track takes the knock. A kicked-out vertical bends easily, and after that the lowest roller has nowhere clean to run.
A light bow in a vertical can sometimes be drawn back true. A crushed or creased section cannot, however respectable it looks once it has been straightened, because the roller keeps catching on the deformed wall every single pass. Swapping that section out is quicker and holds better than persuading a creased one to behave.
Putting a Door Back So It Stays Back
Lifting the door into its track is the easy half. The reason it came out has to be dealt with as well, and that is usually flat-spotted rollers, a hinge that has torn its screws out of a section, a cable gone slack on one side, or a track set too tight or too wide against the door edge.
So the verticals get checked for plumb and even spacing, the horizontals for correct pitch and proper bracing, and the rollers for side load. Then the door is balanced by hand and the opener's travel and force are reset. A door that came off once and was simply lifted back in will come off again.

The door is off track and hanging at an angle. Should I try to free it myself?
Please do not. A door in that position has its weight resting somewhere the hardware was never meant to take it, and freeing one side can drop the other. There are pinch points along every hinge and section joint. Pull the opener release so nobody runs it by accident, keep people and cars clear, and leave it.
Can a bent track be straightened, or does it have to be replaced?
It depends on the damage. A gentle bow near the top of a vertical will often come back true and run fine afterwards. A crease, a crush or a split at a joint will not, and that section gets replaced. It is usually one length of track rather than the whole assembly.
My door binds at the same spot every time. Is that the track?
Most likely, though not necessarily the track alone. The usual suspects are a loose mounting bracket, debris packed into the channel, a worn roller dropping out of line, or a slight twist where the vertical meets the curve. It gets diagnosed by cycling the door slowly by hand with the opener disconnected, which shows exactly where the resistance starts.
