Builder-grade sets carry a modest rating, and a household that uses the garage as its main way in and out gets through that allowance faster than the number suggests. There is a decision to be made at that point rather than a default to accept. You can have like for like, or a thicker wire and a longer-rated set on the same shaft, which simply buys more years before the next one. The technician lays out both and what separates them before anything is wound.

Measuring Before Winding

Nothing gets fitted off a guess. Wire size, inside diameter, overall length and wind direction are read off the failed spring or worked out from the door itself, because two doors of the same width can want very different sets once insulation, glass and section thickness are accounted for. On a three-car garage the double and the single are two separate calculations, not one answer applied twice.

With the old spring off, the shaft, bearings, drums and cables all get looked at while the tension is out of the system, since that is the only sensible moment to do it. The new set is wound to the correct turn count, the door is balanced by hand, and only then is the opener reconnected and its travel and force limits reset so it is not compensating for something mechanical.

The part to check is the shaft above the doorway. A torsion spring that has failed leaves an obvious break in the coil, with the two halves sitting an inch or two apart. The door itself normally looks completely untouched, which is why people go out expecting to find something fallen off a shelf.

Is a new spring worth putting on a door that is already old?

Often, yes. Springs, cables and rollers are wear parts and they get replaced on doors of every age. The point to stop and think is when the sections themselves are split, rusted through along the bottom or bowing out of shape, because then you would be putting a fresh set on something near the end of its life. You will be told plainly which situation you are in.
