Spring Replacement for Chicago Garage Doors
Springs do the lifting. The opener only steers. When a torsion spring on a Chicago garage lets go, the door becomes a couple of hundred pounds of steel with nothing holding it up, and the motor that was fine yesterday will not shift it. BH Garage Door replaces torsion and extension springs across the city, usually the same day.

Most of these calls come off the alley. A brick bungalow with a detached garage gets its door cycled every time somebody leaves the house, and there is no side door to slip through when the spring goes. We stock spring sizes for narrow single-car openings alongside the standard two-car sets.
Why So Many Springs Break in January
Steel gets less forgiving as it gets colder. A spring already worn thin by years of cycling will usually choose the first sub-zero morning to finish, which is why our January calls run heavier than any other month. The bang is loud enough that people ring us thinking something hit the garage.
Cycle count matters more than age. A spring is rated in cycles, one open plus one close, and a common builder spring is rated around 10,000. A household on the Northwest Side that uses the alley garage for every trip out can burn through that in well under a decade. A garage that sits shut for weeks at a time lasts far longer.
Sizing a Spring for an Older City Opening
A garage door spring is not a generic part. Wire diameter, inside diameter and length together decide how much weight it counterbalances, and a spring that is close but not right leaves the door heavy at the floor or drifting open at the top. On older Chicago garages this gets interesting, because plenty of doors have been swapped once or twice since the garage was built and the spring still on the shaft was sized for whatever hung there before.
So we work from the door, not from what is already fitted. A solid wood door on a coach house behaves nothing like a modern steel one of the same size, and an insulated replacement door is heavier again. Where an old door still runs extension springs stretched along the horizontal tracks with no containment cable through them, we will point that out and recommend adding one.
What to Do Between the Bang and the Technician
Stop using the opener. That is the whole list. A motor asked to lift an uncounterbalanced door will strip its drive gear, cook its capacitor, or pull a cable off the drum, and then you are paying to fix three things instead of one.
If the car is inside and you need it, say so when you book. Getting a vehicle out from under a failed spring is doable, but it takes two people and it is not something to try alone in an alley. Our vans carry the common torsion sizes, so most spring calls are finished in a single visit, and the estimate is free and given before any work starts.

Questions
Chicago questions about this job
The door came down hard and now it will not lift. Is that the spring?
Almost certainly. Look at the torsion spring on the shaft above the door. A broken one shows a clear gap of an inch or two in the coil. If the door also feels impossibly heavy by hand, that settles it. Stop running the opener until it is replaced.
Only one spring broke. Do I have to replace both?
On a door with two, yes. They are fitted as a pair and have cycled the same number of times, so the second is close behind the first. Replacing one leaves the door out of balance and usually means a second call within a few months.
My garage is off the alley and my car is stuck inside. Can you get it out?
Yes. Mention it when you book so the technician plans for it. Do not try to lift a door with a failed spring on your own. It is heavier than it looks and it will not stay up where you leave it.
