Roller Replacement for Noisy Chicago Garage Doors
Rollers tell you what is wrong by the sound they make. A dry nylon wheel squeaks steadily through the whole travel. A steel roller with a collapsed bearing grinds, and once it has worn a flat it knocks once per revolution. A roller that has come loose in its stem gives one hard bang at a single point in the travel and is silent everywhere else. Different noises, different parts, different repairs.

It is worth chasing that noise here sooner than you might elsewhere. Chicago lots are narrow and garages sit shoulder to shoulder along the alley, close enough that the building behind you hears your door as clearly as you do. A door that has started grinding at six in the morning is a neighbour problem before it is a mechanical one.
Steel, Nylon, and What the Bearing Count Buys
Rollers are sorted by two things: what the wheel is made of, and how many ball bearings are in the race behind it. A basic steel roller rides on a handful of loose bearings and is the loudest thing on a garage door. Step up and the bearing count rises, the race is sealed against dust, and the wheel is nylon over a steel core.
The nylon is what you hear, or stop hearing. It runs quietly against the track and does not transmit the ring steel sends through the whole door. The sealed bearing is what makes it last, keeping out the fine grit that works its way into everything in a garage off an alley. The rollers that come on a builder-grade door have neither.
The Bottom Roller Is the One to Leave Alone
Rollers look like a straightforward job, and eight of them are. The two at the bottom are not. The bottom roller on each side sits in the bottom bracket, and the lift cable terminates on that same bracket under full spring tension. Unbolting it while the door is down releases that tension with nothing to control it.
This is where most garage door injuries that are not spring injuries come from. If you are replacing rollers yourself, do the upper sections and leave the bottom two. When we do the job the tension is managed properly first, and the bracket, the cable end and the fastener holes in the section all get looked at while it is apart.
Rollers Are Rarely the Only Worn Part
A roller does not wear out on its own. It wears against something. By the time one is loose in its stem, the hinge holding that stem has usually elongated its hole, and the track it has been fighting often has a burr or a flattened section where the wheel has been riding badly.
So the visit is a running-gear job rather than a parts swap. We check every hinge for cracking around the barrel, look at the top fixtures where the top section carries into the curve, run the tracks for high spots and loose fasteners, and clean the debris out of the track rather than lubricating over it. Replacing rollers into a damaged track just wears out the new rollers.

Will nylon rollers really make that much difference to the noise?
On a door running old steel rollers, yes, and it is usually dramatic. Nylon on a sealed bearing removes both the ring of steel on steel and the grinding of a dry race. It does not fix noise coming from the opener, a loose track or a dry hinge, which is why the rest gets checked at the same visit.
How many rollers does a garage door have?
A standard four-section residential door runs ten. They are replaced as a set, because they have all done the same number of cycles and swapping one leaves nine originals to fail on their own schedule.
Can I just replace the one that is making the noise?
You can, and it will quiet down briefly. The rest are the same age and the same wear, so it tends to buy weeks rather than years. The exception is a roller that has been damaged by something specific, like a door that came off track, where a single replacement is genuinely the right call.
