Replacing a Damaged Garage Door Section in Chicago
The trade calls them sections. Everybody else says panels, and usually means the same thing: one of the four or five horizontal slabs that stack up to make the door. What people occasionally mean instead is the raised rectangle stamped into the face of a section. That is a shape pressed into the steel, not a separate component, and it cannot be replaced on its own.

The distinction decides the job. A dented section can come out and a new one go in. Damage across two sections, or damage to a stamping no longer in production, is a different conversation. When One Section Is the Right Repair
Section replacement is at its best on a door that is otherwise sound: springs with life left, a straight track, a finish that still looks like a finish. Take out the damaged slab, drop in a match, rebalance for the weight change and you have a working door with a fraction of the disruption.
It stops making sense on doors well into their second decade, where the springs are near the end of their cycle life and the hardware is tired. Putting one new section into that fixes the part that shows while the parts that matter carry on aging. On a brick alley garage there is another argument for taking the door seriously: it is the only wall of the building that is not masonry, so it does all the sealing and securing on its own.
Matching a Door Nobody Makes Anymore
Three things must line up for a section to disappear into an existing door: the stamping pattern, the surface texture, and the construction. A short-panel stamping will not sit under a long-panel one. A woodgrain face beside a smooth one reads as a repair from across the alley. A single-skin section bolted below insulated ones changes how the door behaves as well as how it looks.
On doors past twenty years old the original stamping is often discontinued. Sometimes a current profile passes. Sometimes the honest answer is that nothing matches and you would rather have a new door than a patched one. We bring you that answer with the options rather than ordering and hoping.
The Bottom Section Carries More Than the Weatherseal
The bottom section takes most of the damage, and it is also the most structurally loaded one on the door. The bottom brackets are bolted to it, the lift cables terminate on those brackets, and the astragal seal that closes against the slab is fixed along its lower edge. It is the section that holds the door's weight when the door is closed.
So a bent bottom section is not only cosmetic. If the end stiles are pushed out of line the cable geometry changes, the door lifts slightly crooked, and the rollers fight the track from then on. When we quote one we check the brackets, cable ends and floor seal too, because the impact that dented the steel rarely stopped at the steel.

The dent is purely cosmetic and the door still works. Do I need to do anything?
Often no, if it is a shallow dent in the middle of a section face and nothing is bent at the ends. Watch it for two things: paint breaking at the crease, which is where rust starts, and any change in how the door tracks. Either of those turns it into a real repair.
My door is old and the manufacturer is gone. What are my options?
We identify the door by its stamping profile, section height and construction rather than by brand, and check whether any current section matches closely enough. Where nothing does, the choice is a visible mismatch or a new door, and we will lay out both instead of picking for you.
Can a dented steel section be pushed back out instead of replaced?
Sometimes on a broad, shallow dent with no crease. Once the steel has folded it has stretched, and pushing it back leaves a visible ripple that shows up worse in low sun than the original dent did. On insulated sections there is backing behind the skin that limits access anyway.
