Rollers are small, inexpensive parts doing a job the rest of the door depends on. When they go, the door stops tracking straight, the opener starts pulling harder than it should, and the wear spreads outward into the hinges, the track, and eventually the spring.
Steel, Nylon, and Which One Actually Goes Quiet
Most builder-grade doors leave the factory on plain steel rollers with no bearings in them at all. A stem, a wheel, and metal riding metal. They are loud when new and louder after a decade. The upgrade is a nylon-tired roller running on a sealed ball-bearing race, usually ten or thirteen bearings. The nylon tire is what kills the noise. The sealed race is what keeps grit out so it stays quiet.
Stem length matters as much as the wheel does. A long stem sitting in a hinge cut for a shorter one lets the roller ride at an angle and dig into the track wall. We match the stem to the hinge rather than fitting whatever the standard part happens to be.
The One Roller Nobody Should Pull Out
Every roller on the door can be changed by rolling the door up and popping them out of their hinges one at a time with the door supported. The bottom roller is the exception. It sits in the bottom bracket, and on almost every door that bracket is also where the lift cable is anchored, under full spring tension.
Unbolting a loaded bottom bracket releases that tension all at once and in one direction. This is where a large share of garage door injuries happen. If the bottom roller is the one that failed, that is a service call, not a Saturday project.
Rollers Are Rarely the Only Worn Part
By the time a roller is visibly cracked, chipped, or wobbling on its stem, it has usually been running rough long enough to leave marks on everything around it. We look at the track for the flat spots and score lines a dead roller cuts, check the hinges for elongated screw holes where the stems have been working sideways, and run the door by hand to see whether it still tracks true.
On the older detached garages around Arlington Heights we also check that the vertical track still runs parallel to the jamb. Wood-framed garages from that era move as the frame settles and the slab shifts underneath it, and a track pulled a quarter inch out of true will destroy a fresh set of rollers just as fast as it destroyed the last set.

Will new rollers on their own fix a noisy door?

Do you replace all the rollers or just the bad ones?
Usually all of them. They are the same age and have taken the same number of cycles, so replacing two out of ten means the other eight follow within a year. The exception is a door where one roller failed early from a specific cause, such as a bent hinge or an impact on the track, and the rest are genuinely sound.
