Retrofit the Opener You Have, or Replace It
Newer openers have Wi-Fi in the head unit and only need joining to your network. Openers from roughly the last fifteen years will usually take a retrofit controller instead: a small module wired to the same terminals as the wall button, plus a tilt or contact sensor mounted on the door that reports whether it is open or closed.
The retrofit path runs out on older units. An opener that predates photo-eye safety sensors should not be put on a network at all, because operating a door remotely when there is no external entrapment protection means closing a door you cannot see. If that is what is hanging in the garage, the conversation becomes a replacement, and the safety sensors come as part of it.
Wi-Fi and the Detached Garage Problem
This is the part that catches people out in the older parts of Arlington Heights. Those houses often have a detached garage at the back of the lot while the router sits at the front of the house behind a couple of walls. The opener joins the network happily during setup, standing right next to it with a phone, and then drops off every time you are actually somewhere else.
So we check the signal at the head unit before committing to a controller. If it is marginal, an access point or a mesh node out in the garage solves it, and that is a far better answer than a smart opener that works about half the year. On attached garages this is almost never an issue.
What Smart Does Not Fix
A networked opener will not lift a door that is out of balance, and it will not make up for a spring at the end of its life. If anything it makes those problems more visible, because now you get an alert every time the door fails to finish a cycle.
We check balance, travel limits and force settings as part of the install. An opener set to push harder than it should will pass its own self-tests and still be the thing that eventually strips a gear.

Will my existing remotes and keypad still work?
Yes. A retrofit controller wires in parallel with the wall button and does not touch the opener's own radio, so remotes, keypads and the wall control all keep working exactly as before. Nothing needs reprogramming, and you are not locked into using the phone.
What happens in a power outage?
A smart opener is still an opener. No power, no motor. Some units carry a battery backup that will run a limited number of cycles, and the manual release cord works regardless. What you lose in an outage is remote status and control, because the Wi-Fi is down along with everything else.
Is it safe to close the door from my phone when I am not home?
On a compliant opener, yes, because the photo eyes across the bottom of the opening stop and reverse the door if anything breaks the beam. Most systems also sound a warning before a remote close. This is exactly why we will not put an opener with no photo eyes onto a network.
