Getting Your Phone Talking to the Garage
There are two routes to phone control and they are not close in cost. Either a small controller is added to the opener already hanging from your ceiling, or the whole head unit is replaced with one that has Wi-Fi built in.

Which route applies comes down to the age of what you have. Openers made from roughly the late nineties onward have the safety sensors and the terminal layout a retrofit controller needs. Older units generally do not, and forcing the point is not worth doing.
Retrofit Controller or a New Head Unit
A retrofit controller wires into the wall-button terminals and adds a tilt or position sensor to the top section of the door. Your existing remotes, keypad and wall control all carry on working exactly as they did. It is the cheaper path and on a sound opener it is usually the right one.
Replacing the head makes sense when the opener is already tired — a stripped nylon gear, a worn sprocket, or a remote system old enough to lack rolling codes. It is also the moment to move from chain to belt drive, which is worth real money on a house with a bedroom over the garage. In that case the smart side is built in and nothing extra hangs off the motor.
The Wi-Fi Has to Actually Reach the Ceiling
This is where most installations disappoint people. The router usually sits in a den, a basement or an upstairs office at the far end of the house. Between it and the opener there is an insulated common wall, often brick veneer outside it, a steel door and a car parked underneath.
Signal gets tested at the opener before anything is committed. If it is marginal the honest answer is a mesh node or an access point nearer the garage, not a controller that works four times in five. An app that fails intermittently is worse than no app, because you only find out about it once you are already down the road.
Closing a Door You Cannot See
Remote closing is the feature people buy these for and it is the one that deserves thought. The photo eyes still govern the opening and they are not bypassed — the door refuses to close with the beam broken, which is correct behaviour, not a fault.
What the sensors cannot do is tell you why. Pair remote closing with a camera in the garage, or at minimum rely on the app alerts and the audible warning most systems sound before an unattended close. A scheduled auto-close is genuinely useful in a household where the door gets left open after the school run, but set the delay long enough that nobody gets caught out carrying shopping.

Will my existing remotes and keypad still work?
With a retrofit controller, yes — it works alongside the original receiver and changes nothing about how the door already operates. With a new head unit the remotes have to be re-paired or replaced, and any exterior keypad usually needs reprogramming to the new opener.
What happens if the internet drops or the power fails?
Without internet, the app stops working but the wall button and remotes carry on as normal — the radio side does not depend on Wi-Fi. In a power cut nothing electrical runs unless the opener has a battery backup, and the manual release cord always lets you lift the door by hand.
Can I let a delivery driver in without giving out my code?
Most current systems support temporary or guest access that you grant and revoke from the app, and some tie in with delivery services directly. It is worth deciding beforehand whether you want that at all, because it only makes sense if you are comfortable with the notification trail.
