The predictable offenders are the lag bolts holding the opener's header bracket, the hinge screws in the top section where the opener arm pulls hardest, the drum set screws on the torsion shaft, and the bolts fixing the vertical track to the jamb.
Each gets checked and torqued properly rather than nipped up. A drum set screw that has crept lets the cable slacken on one side, and that is how a perfectly sound door starts landing crooked for no reason anybody can see.
An Unheated Garage Attached to a Heated House
The attached garage is an odd environment. It shares a wall with a warm house, has an insulated door across the front and no heat of its own, so it swings from humid in August to well below freezing in January, several times each winter.
That cycle is hard on everything in it. Condensation forms on cold steel when a wet car comes in, rust starts at the bottom brackets and cable ends where meltwater and road salt collect, and old grease turns to varnish on the roller stems. The floor seal goes brittle and stops sealing, which lets more damp in. None of it announces itself; it just accumulates.
Book It Before the Cold, Not During It
Spring failures cluster around the first properly cold snap of the year. The steel is less forgiving at low temperature, the door is at its heaviest with ice on the seal, and a spring already near the end of its cycle life picks that particular morning to go.
Which makes autumn the useful time for a service visit. A door seen in October gets its balance set, its cables inspected and its weather seal replaced while all of that is straightforward work in a warm garage. The same door in February is an emergency call with a car behind it and somewhere to be.
