A Spring Does Not Know What Year It Is
Springs are rated in cycles. One cycle is one trip up and one trip down. A standard spring is built for around ten thousand of them, after which the steel has been worked past what it was designed to take.
How fast a household spends those cycles varies more than people expect. Where the garage is the door everyone actually walks through, two cars out in the morning, a school run, shopping, bikes in and out all summer, ten thousand arrives years earlier than the calendar suggests. Higher-cycle springs exist and are worth asking about on a door used like that.
The Bearings and Drums Wore Out Alongside It
A torsion spring rides on a shaft, and that shaft turns in end bearings with a cable drum at each end. All of it has been running as long as the spring has. A dry end bearing will chew through a new spring far faster than it should, and a drum with a groove worn into it will never let the cable seat cleanly.
So the old spring comes off and its wire gauge, inside diameter, length and wind direction are read off it before anything is fitted. New springs go on as a pair where the door has two, the parts around them get inspected while the tension is out of the system, and the door is balanced by hand until it will sit still halfway. The opener force settings are reset last, because the door is suddenly much lighter to move.

They were fitted on the same day and have lifted the same door the same number of times. The survivor is not fine, it is next. Replacing the pair also keeps the door balanced, which is the whole point of the exercise, and it saves paying for a second visit within the year.
Can I get the car out before the technician arrives?
If the door is already down, pulling the red release cord disconnects it from the opener so it can be lifted by hand. With a broken spring it will feel like lifting the car rather than the door, so do not fight it. If the door is stuck up in the air, leave the cord alone entirely, because releasing the trolley can let the door come down hard.
My two-car door has only one spring. Should it have two?
Not necessarily. Single-spring setups are legitimate when the spring is correctly sized for the weight. On a wide insulated door a matched pair holds balance better and shares the load across the shaft and bearings, and the technician will measure the door and give you a straight answer rather than a default.
The door feels heavier than it used to. Is that why springs keep breaking?
Very possibly. If an insulated door was fitted over an older opening and the original springs were carried across, they have been under-rated for the job ever since. Springs sized to the door's real weight last the way they are supposed to.
