Quieting a Door You Can Hear Through the Floor

Steel, Nylon and the Number of Ball Bearings
Original-equipment rollers are usually steel wheels on a plain stem with seven ball bearings, and on budget doors with no bearings at all. Steel on steel is loud when new and gets louder as the races pit and the wheel goes out of round. Flat spots announce themselves as a rhythmic knock at a fixed interval.
The replacement is a nylon wheel on a stem with ten or thirteen sealed bearings. Nylon takes the metallic contact noise out of the track, and sealed bearings keep grit off the race. A two-car door has ten of them, and the change is obvious on the first cycle rather than something you have to convince yourself about.
The Bottom Two Are a Different Job Entirely
Eight of the rollers come out easily — open the door partway, unpin the hinge, swap the wheel. The bottom two do not. They live in the bottom brackets, and those brackets are what the lift cables anchor to.
With the door closed, every bit of spring tension in the system runs through that bracket. Undo the bolts and the cable releases with the bracket still attached to it. This is the most common way homeowners get hurt working on their own door. Those two get changed with the door secured and the tension controlled, and they are worth handing over.
What New Rollers Fix, and What They Do Not
New rollers cure roughness, rumble and the squeal of a dry bearing. They will not cure a door that binds at the same spot on every trip, because that is track geometry. They will not cure a door that lands hard on the floor, because that is spring tension.
So the wheels get changed and the rest gets assessed while the door is apart: hinge play at each joint, track spacing through the curve, cable condition at the drums. If something else is making the noise you get told what it is, rather than sold ten wheels that were only half the answer.

How long do the original rollers usually last?
Steel rollers on a door used several times a day are often past their best around ten years, though they rarely fail outright — they just get progressively noisier and rougher. Sealed nylon replacements typically go considerably longer because the bearing stays clean.
Can I just oil them instead of replacing them?
It helps briefly on an open-bearing steel roller and does nothing at all on a sealed nylon one. If the race is already pitted or the wheel has gone out of round, oil quietens it for a fortnight and then the noise comes back. Worth trying once before deciding.
One roller has jumped out of the track. Is that just the roller?
Usually not. A roller comes out because something else let it — a bent section of track, a cracked hinge, a loose track bolt or a cable that has gone slack on one side. Putting it back without finding that cause means it happens again, so the whole side gets checked.
